On this day, September 5, 1955, we lost Sergeant John R. Miller when he was killed in airplane crash south of Lebanon in Boone County. Sergeant Miller was assigned to an Indiana National Guard aircraft for Labor Day Holiday patrol for traffic violators. The aircraft banked too sharply at low speed and plummeted into a field. Both Sergeant Miller and the National Guard pilot were killed. Sergeant Miller served with the Indiana State Police for 14 years and was assigned to the Lafayette Post.

On this day, August 31, 1955, we lost Trooper Earl Brown when he was shot and killed while searching a suspicious person who was walking along US31 in Jackson County while carrying a shotgun. Trooper Brown and a Columbus City Police officer arrived on scene and investigated the subject who was walking near the Bartholomew and Jackson County Line. During the search of the subject, he pulled a handgun and shot Trooper Brown twice. The Columbus PD officer returned fire and wounded the subject, who survived and was later determined to be insane. Trooper Brown had served with the Indiana State Police for nearly 15 years and was assigned to the Seymour Post.

Troopers from the Bloomington District are currently conducting a double fatality crash investigation on I-69 southbound at the 93 mile marker in Greene County. Both northbound and southbound lanes are closed. ISP recommends motorists avoid the area and seek alternative routes of travel.
