Kearns for Ward 1

Kearns for Ward 1 I'm Jenna Kearns, born in Bloomington, and I am your Ward 1 incumbent for Bloomington City Council.

Hello, I am Jenna Kearns, a native of Bloomington, IL and I am your Ward 1 candidate for Bloomington City Council. My education and career achievements have been centered around my passion for helping others. My commitment to public service can be seen through my work with nonprofit organizations. My desire to help my community can be measured by this step I’ve taken to be involved in city council

. I am determined to be responsive and accountable to the needs of my neighbors. I joined the Illinois Bar Foundation in May 2017 and am currently serving as Senior Program Manager for Illinois JusticeCorps, a program that enhances access to justice for the growing number of unrepresented people in the courts by empowering and training volunteers to help people without lawyers navigate the court system. In this role, I am responsible for overseeing all aspects of the JusticeCorps program at eight courthouses in Illinois, including McLean. I have been recognized for the work I’ve been able to perform with Prairie State Legal Services and I was honored through the Pantagraph for my nonprofit work in their “20 under 40’ spotlight. In this feature, it highlights other recognitions including being selected as a keynote speaker for the Central Illinois Paralegal Association’s Annual Legal Education Seminar and my ongoing involvement with the David Davis Mansion as a volunteer docent and board member. When elected as Ward 1 Councilperson, my priority will be to support efforts that are important to keeping this community safe, economically competitive, and help maintain our reputation as a great place to raise a family. Through accountability, responsiveness, and transparency, I plan to prove that not only can we accomplish these goals as neighbors; but to remain fiscally responsible in our endeavors in the process. My name is Jenna Kearns and I ask for your vote on April 4th to represent Ward 1 on Bloomington’s City Council.

Hey there,

I want to take a moment to acknowledge everyone who’s been part of the recent conversations around data centers.

Whether you attended last week’s forums, submitted comments, or stayed engaged in other ways, it’s clear that a lot of time, thought, and care has gone into these discussions. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

It’s been heard clearly that large data centers like those discussed are not welcome in our community.

As we move forward, I am supportive of an initial moratorium, pushing for transparency from the City around any proposals under consideration, and advocating for thoughtful, protective actions that prioritize our people, our community, our land, and our resources.

y'all! I think we should do this again. who's with me?!

Ahead of tonight’s meeting, I want to share why I oppose removing the downtown flex lane.

The flex lane already balances deliveries, access, bikes, and flexibility over time. Replacing it with more fixed parking prioritizes car storage over people and narrows who downtown serves.

Downtown should support walkability, accessibility, and long-term business vitality -- not just curbside parking.

Couldn't have expressed it any better. Thanks Abby

Abby's statement:
"I want to be very clear: there is no mega data center on any upcoming May agenda. There are no plans in motion, and from my conversations, there is no interest among City Council members in pursuing one.

Our City Staff has no interest in putting in one behind our backs. They couldn't if they wanted to. A project of that scale would require extensive public steps, annexation, multiple ordinances, commission reviews, and full Council approval, each with opportunities for transparency and community input.

In short: there is nothing being quietly advanced, and no path for something like this to happen without the public knowing and being involved every step of the way."

Bloomington Mayor Dan Brady said Friday the city has no plans to consider a data center proposal in May, and the city will schedule a series of public forums on the controversial topic.

“Chick Season” is here! The City welcomes residents to apply for Accessory Use Permits for their backyard chickens, beginning this Friday, March 27, 2026. Applying for these required permits is quick, easy, and helps the City remain aware of active chicken-keeping locations for public health purposes. These permits allow you to keep up to 4 chickens on your property, in an approved coop, in a designated location. For additional information and links to apply for a permit, visit: www.cityblm.org/planning.

Already have a permit and need to renew? Keep an eye on your email, or send a note to [email protected] for more information.

Have fun caring for your flock!

Signs that spring is coming in the Midwest:
1. the geese are back;
2. seeing a young man dressed in shorts, tshirt, and flip flops when weather is in the 40s.

A huge congratulations to these exemplary community members. Happy to have been present at the 50th MLK Awards ceremony honoring these folks. Their commitment to our community is inspiring.

To paraphrase the keynote speaker Lennox Yearwood Jr., the work didn't end on the balcony. On this MLK Day, I want to thank everyone for the work they do each day, big or small, visible or invisible, that makes us stronger together. Thank you.
