All four shifts of the Bloomfield Fire Department recently completed firefighter training focused on communication with coworkers, reinforcing the importance of clear, effective communication both on and off the fireground.

Training like this strengthens teamwork, enhances safety, and ensures our members are prepared to operate efficiently in high-stress situations. Thank you to Dr. Donnette Green for providing valuable insight and instruction through SEI MORE framework.•

The Bloomfield Fire Department is proud to announce Fire Captain Oscar Morales as our 2025 Firefighter of the Year.

This award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional valor, customer service, dedication to duty, loyalty, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Captain Morales embodies each of these qualities and sets the standard for others to follow.

Captain Morales is one of our most highly trained technical rescuers, holding certifications in Swiftwater, Confined Space, Trench Rescue, and Rope Rescue. His advanced skillset ensures Bloomfield is prepared for the most complex and high‑risk emergencies. He was also among our first certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, reflecting his long-standing dedication to community safety and public education.

His impact extends far beyond operations. Captain Morales has been a vital member of our Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team, participated in Rutgers’ Call Center Peer Support program, and completed UASI resiliency training, strengthening our department’s ability to navigate high‑stress incidents with professionalism and compassion.

What truly distinguishes Captain Morales is his humility, empathy, and steady leadership. Whether assisting a resident during a crisis or mentoring a young firefighter, he treats every person with respect, patience, and genuine care. His exceptional physical conditioning further enhances his effectiveness on the fireground, allowing him to perform at the highest level during demanding operations.

Captain Morales consistently steps up, takes on additional responsibilities, and supports every aspect of our mission from emergency response to training and crew development. He leads by example, fostering growth, readiness, and confidence in those around him.

Please join us in congratulating Fire Captain Oscar Morales on this well‑deserved honor. His service, leadership, and dedication strengthen our department, enhance public safety, and uphold the highest traditions of the fire service.

Congratulations, Captain Morales!

Last week, Bloomfield Firefighters were dispatched to Hoover Ave for a reported motor vehicle accident with entrapment. Crews arrived to find a vehicle that had exited the Garden State Parkway northbound ramp, continued through the T-intersection, left the roadway, and struck a shed in a residential yard. Firefighters quickly stabilized the compromised structure, accessed the vehicle, and successfully extricated the victim, who was then turned over to Bloomfield EMS .ems for medical care. •

This weekend, our volunteer members proudly participated in the annual Totowa, West Paterson, and Little Falls Holiday Parade. Over the past few weeks, they dedicated their time to decorating Rescue 1 and Car 35 with festive Christmas lights, helping bring some extra holiday cheer to the community. Our team had a fantastic time taking part in this wonderful tradition and connecting with everyone along the parade route.

Interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter? We’re always looking for committed community members to join our ranks. Stop by Fire Headquarters Monday through Friday between 9 AM and 4 PM to learn more and begin your journey with the BFD! Photo credit Ron Bombaro •

As most families gathered for Thanksgiving dinner yesterday, your Bloomfield Firefighters were completing final preparations at the firehouse for ours when Engine 3 was dispatched to a cardiac arrest emergency. Shortly after, Engine 2 was requested directly to the scene of a second-alarm house fire in the City of Orange. A reminder that even on holidays, your Bloomfield Firefighters stand ready to respond 24/7/365. Our thoughts are with all families affected by yesterday’s incidents. Photo Credit ABC7NY •
