While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the immediate risk to the general American public for contracting the coronavirus remains low, they suggest that now is the time for people to start preparing.

To stay up to date and informed on official coronavirus developments, you can sign up for the latest CDC updates here: https://www.cdc.gov/Other/emailupdates/.

Here are the CDC’s prevention tips:

- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

- Stay home when you are sick.

- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, and certainly if your commute includes public transit.

- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.

- Face masks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The purpose of a face mask is to prevent droplets from sneezing and coughing from becoming airborne.

****ACTION NEEDED TO SAVE YOUR LIFE****

One of the first things, and one of the most important things, you’ll be asked when you call 911 is: “What’s the address of the emergency?”

There’s a big problem though if you’re depending on EMS, fire, or police to find your home with mailboxes looking like this and nothing else to easily identify the street number on your house.

All four of these images were taken in our service areas.

Here are some good guidelines to follow to ensure first responders from any agency can find you during an emergency:

1. Numbers must be visible from the street.

2. Numbers should be at least 5 inches high.*

3. Numbers should be placed on a contrasting background, with a reflective coating on the numbers for easy visibility at night.

4. Repair or replace aging address number placards, especially on mailboxes that are a distance from the front of your residence.

5. Prune any bushes, tree limbs, or other growth that has covered your house numbers.

6. Numbers should be placed on or beside the front door. If your door is not easily seen from the street, or if you live in an area where mailboxes are clustered, put the numbers on a post, fence, or tree at the driveway entrance so they can be clearly seen from the street.

7. In addition to numbers on the front door of your house, if you have a rural-style mailbox, reflective and contrasting numbers should be placed on both sides of the box so they can be seen by an emergency vehicle approaching from either direction.

*Note: Some cities and counties have sign ordinances with specific height requirements. Contact your city or county officials for specific height requirements related to guidelines for posting emergency 911 address numbers.

Recently, I have been receiving fraudulent robo phone calls from someone claiming that my social security number has been suspended due to fraud. The Social Security Administration DOES NOT and WILL NOT contact anyone in this manner.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) estimates that scammers call thousands of Americans every day, looking to wrangle personal information, steal benefits or both. It's a common form of government imposter scam (/money/scams-fraud/info-2019/imposter.html), in which fraudsters pose as government officials to get you to send money or give up personal and financial data for use in identity theft.

This con is sometimes executed via robocall - the recording provides a number for you to call to remedy the problem. In another version, the caller says your bank account is at risk due to the illicit activity and offers to help you keep it safe.

To prevent fraud, set yourself up to do this: Set up a My Social Security Account /retirement/social-security/questions-answers/what-is-my-social-security/ online and check it on a monthly basis for signs of anything unusual, even if you have yet started to collect benefits.

You may also install a robocall blocking app on your smartphone or sign up for a robocall blocking service from your mobile network provider.

Ok this is not a bad idea think about it.

ATTORNEY'S ADVICE - NO CHARGE

Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice! A corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in his company:

1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put 'PHOTO ID REQUIRED.'

2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the ...complete account number on the 'For' line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.

3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS # printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have It printed, anyone can get it.

4. Place the contents of your wallet on photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.

I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a Name, address, Social Security number, credit cards..

Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have firsthand knowledge because my wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieves ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online, and more.

But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:

5. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.

6.. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

But here's what is perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought to do this.)

7. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name.

The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

by the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft, all the damage had been done. There are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks.

Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your wallet, if it has been stolen:

1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-62851-800-525-6285

2.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742 1-888-397-3742

3.) Trans Union : 1-800-680 7289 1-800-680 7289

4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line):

1-800-269-0271 1-800-269-0271

We pass along jokes on the Internet; we pass along just about everything.

If you are willing to pass this information along, it could really help someone that you care about.
