Emily Lee has been a member of the Tappan Zee High School Girls Varsity Swim team since she was in the eighth grade and is an active member of several extracurriculars including the National Honor, Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish, Tri-M, and History Honor societies as well as committing to her leadership positions as once Treasurer and current Co-Secretary in National Art Honor Society and Vice President in Korean Club. She has also participated in VAASA, Tones, and the Math team.

Emily will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point this fall and serve for five years. “I never really thought about attending West Point but after my family member was appointed, I remembered my short time at a lacrosse game there. I recalled how sharp and elite the students looked, and I wanted to leave a strong impression like that to future generations. I also like how they really focus on building community there. All of the class sizes are less than 20 people and I like that structure,” said Emily. “Although I have some time to choose a branch in the army, I’m looking at Chemical Corps. or Aviation. Once I’ve graduated from West Point, my plan is to pursue something in the field of science. I took AP Biology and AP Chemistry here and I’ll admit, they’re really hard classes, but the teachers made the learning fun.”

A memorable aspect of your K-12 experience: “My favorite memories are anything related to the swim team and just every single meet. As this year's co-captain, I feel so proud to be part of this team and we share such a strong bond. Everyone is so welcoming and kind. The meets can be really long but we always made it fun. We’d wear inflatable costumes and cheer each other on.”

Advice to your high school freshman self?: “Don’t procrastinate! As soon as a teacher assigns something, start it right away. Also, go out more and socialize. I made a habit of staying home a lot but it’s important to have fun with your friends as well.” Emily also expresses that a lesson she learned throughout the high school experience is if you are interested in something, like art, music, or theater, fully go for it! “If you enjoy the extracurriculars you do and make the most out of it, I promise you, good things will come out of it," she said. Emily won multiple awards for art, music, and theater, and even received the honor of 3rd degree black belt for taekwondo during her time at TZHS.

Thank you to: “My parents. They pushed me to do extracurriculars and clubs, which helped me get into West Point and boost my resume. Especially now, you need more than just academics to help your chances of getting into the school you want to.”

Three teams of Tappan Zee High School Computer Science Capstone student-inventors pitched their original proofs of concept to tech investors and executives at the annual Project Invent Demo Day in Manhattan last month and one team won $500 to further their development of their product!

Team SO-Lutions, including Delia Spiegelman, Kiersten Cavalli, Magdalena Bednarz and Uri Richardson, received the Product Pivot Award for their product, REACH, which is a mobility aid for senior citizens. The team worked with community partner, Kara Rodriquez from Mozaic Senior Life, and they won $500 to further their development of the reacher they designed.

Team SO INVENTZ, including Alanna Sheridan, Max Bondoc, further expanded on the work that TZHS Computer Science Capstone students have been developing over the past few years with WayToGo, an app to streamline the school bus system.

Team Zynergy, including Adrian Kang, Jacob Kim, spoke about their product, S.E.A. Card, which is an I.D. card that students could use to check out of school quickly and efficiently.

TZHS has fielded Project Invent teams through its Computer Science Capstone course for the past five years; this is the fourth consecutive year that students have won awards. Winnings are used to fund the development of future products.

Roses are red, violets are blue; here’s something beautiful that reminds me of you!

Students at William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School this week are giving families their flowers (literally!) thanks to the SOCES PTA's annual Flowers for Families program. CLE classes (pictured) took time out of their day to handpick the best representation of their loved one. “Which one looks like the most ‘mom’ flower to you,” asked one child. 🌸🌺🌷

Throughout his time at Tappan Zee High School, Michael Valentik has been a member of the Track & Field, Swimming, Cross Country and Winter Indoor Track teams as well as a member of the Spanish and Chess clubs. He is also a 2026 Seal of Biliteracy recipient in Czech and English.

This fall, he will attend Dominican University where he will major in Nursing. “I’ve always had an interest and passion in nursing. Once I’m in the program, I’ll figure out what specific field of nursing I want to pursue. There’s so many different types of nursing specialties to choose from. I’m looking forward to exploring different areas of nursing and finding the path that's right for me,” noted Michael.

A memorable aspect of your K-12 experience?: “Being a member of the Cross Country team. The enthusiasm and energy of the team created an environment I truly enjoyed. The Queensbury meet stood out as a highlight—it was always my favorite due to its unique atmosphere. The overnight stay added to the excitement, and as one of the first meets of the season, it set a motivating tone for the year ahead. The energy and spirit of Queensbury were unlike any other, making it a cherished tradition and a defining part of my high school experience.”

Advice to your freshman self?: “Enjoy every moment of your four years at Tappan Zee because they go by faster than you think. Get involved, make new friends, and try new things. Make the most of every opportunity because before you know it graduation will be there”

Thank you to: “I want to thank my family for always being there for me and supporting me throughout my life. Their encouragement and sacrifices have helped me become the person I am today. I also want to thank my friends for their support, memories and for making my high school experience so enjoyable. Finally, I want to thank Coach Driscoll and all of my coaches. Coach Driscoll coached me throughout high school and inspired my passion for running. Because of that, I’m excited to continue running at the collegiate level. I’m grateful for everything they have all done for me.”

Bridget Dunn is a highly decorated student-athlete on the Cross Country and Winter and Spring Track & Field teams who won the 2025 2000M Steeplechase NYS Championship title, the 2024 Team Cross Country NYS Championship title and recently qualified for the 2026 NYS Championships. She is the Secretary for the Spanish Honor Society and is a member of the National Honor Society, Leo Club, Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse and the Girl Scouts.

A D1 recruited athlete, Bridget will attend Furman University this fall, where she will run track & field and intends to major in business. “I really grew into the sport and learned a lot over the last four years. I’ve learned to enjoy the ups and downs that come with the sport and I’m looking forward to seeing how I can continue to succeed in the sport in college,” said Bridget. “I took a bunch of business classes while at TZ. While I’m not 100% sure I will ultimately pursue business, I want to explore the subject more and see what else I can do with it.”

A memorable aspect of your K-12 experience: “I loved Field Day at Cottage Lane. It was always so fun to work together with my classmates and compete with the other classes.”

Advice to your freshman self?: “Try hard in all of your classes and build strong relationships with your teachers and peers because it will help you in the future.”

Thank you to: “I really want to thank Mr. Driscoll. As my coach, he’s been so helpful with my entire high school career and now my college journey. He’s been so supportive and has guided me along the way.”

The South Orangetown Middle School Chapter of La Sociedad Hispánica de Amistad, Somos Amigos, hosted their first-ever induction ceremony on June 1!

The Sociedad Hispánica de Amistad (SHA) is a society for Pre-K through 9th grade students of Spanish or Portuguese started by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Since students are beginning to study languages earlier than ever before, the AATSP established the society to encourage young students to study languages in the lower grades and beyond, as well as to promote ambassadorship, service to community, and service to school.

110 seventh and eighth grade students who study Spanish were officially inducted into the honor society by SOMS World Language teachers Lisa Hackett, Ashley Gonzalez and Kathy Tobin after meeting the membership requirements, which includes maintaining above a 90 average for all four quarters and completing five hours of community service with a focus on an event to spread the Spanish culture within school or an action to expand their knowledge in the Spanish culture. The service hours must support the Spanish program in some way and they included attending cultural events, watching cultural movies/shows, studying Spanish artists and creating their own art or creating presentations that were shared regarding current events in Spanish-speaking countries.

During his remarks, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Rudy Arietta, Ed.D., spoke about the importance of taking and sticking with a language beyond middle and high school. “I took Spanish throughout high school and college but I regret not continuing to practice it. Being able to speak a second or third language will not only help you now, but when you go out into the ‘real world’ as you begin your career and travel. It gives you a glimpse into understanding more perspectives and makes you a more well rounded person,” said Arietta.

Jaywon Chae is the Class of 2026 Salutatorian, President of the Student Organization, President of the Computer Science Club, Co-President and co-founder of both DECA and the Investment Club, Vice President of Science Olympiad, a member of the Boys Varsity Tennis and Boys Varsity Swim teams, a software and marketing lead for the SO BOTZ FIRST Robotics team and a member of the National Honor Society as well as Mu Alpha Theta, History and Computer Science honor societies. Additionally, Jaywon served as the first Ex-Officio Student Board Member for the 2025-26 school year.

This fall, Jaywon will attend Yale University where he intends to double major in Economics and Statistics and Data Science. “Participating in so many different clubs and trying different electives really helped me understand what I want to do in the future. I enjoyed the research aspect of the Computer Science Capstone class but then taking different history classes made me interested in economics and seeing how trade and war has impacted the economy throughout history. One of my favorite classes was AP European History with Mr. Robertson,” said Chae.

Jaywon’s three reflections:

A memorable aspect of your K-12 experience: “Participating in competitions through the clubs that I’m a part of have been very memorable and meaningful to me. The Robotics team just went to Texas for the World Championships and then getting to go to the New York State and International DECA conferences was amazing. For the International conference, we placed 8th overall out of 200 competitors. On those trips, I got to work with my friends but I also had the opportunity to meet new people and learn from them.”

Advice to your freshman self?: “Explore and try a bunch of new things. Never be afraid to take initiative.”

Thank you to: “I want to thank Ms. Connell. I’ve taken her classes all four years of high school and she is one of the advisors for SO BOTZ. Even though I’m not majoring in computer science, her classes have been instrumental in helping me gain the skills that I need like public speaking, technical skills and soft skills. She’s always ambitious and when she has an idea or a goal, she goes for it. It’s been really motivating to see throughout my high school career.”

Last evening, approximately 120 projects were on display during SOCSD's 11th Annual School Maker Faire. The Tappan Zee High School gym transformed into an impressive showcase featuring some of what students across grades K-12 have learned this year in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). Those both new and returning to one of the District's most anticipated events had much to explore — from 3D Printing Pens to Cafeteria Service Bots to the SO BOTZ Robotics Team.

"This is a great opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and critical thinking skills through an interdisciplinary project," said Superintendent of Schools Brian Culot, Ed.D. "It's also wonderful to see so many clubs and teams presenting for our younger students." Events like this help to drum up further interest in STEAM-related courses — like TZHS' Science Research, Project Lead The Way and Computer Science Capstone (all of which were in attendance) — by the time learners enter Grade 9 and fields post-graduation.

The future sure looks bright!
