Blaney Park Resort, located at "Blaney Park", in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, was a well-known family resort for decades up until the 1970s. In 2007, former employees and friends gathered at Blaney Park for a reunion...this page is composed of photos and information that were on the 'BlaneyParkReunion2007.com' website for several years. Be sure to view the Blaney Park video on my Youtube channel, a
s well! http://youtu.be/0trul05wCvo
Ruth Adams Webber was the manager of "The Inn". All said and done, Blaney Park, Michigan had this F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S restaurant that was 'run' by R.A.W. in the 50's and 60's. Ruth Webber not only organized the staff, but was responsible for the 'rare roast beef' that everyone loved as carved in the nightly buffets by all those chefs in their white hats. I think the lady in the chef hat almost in silouette from the window is Tish...may be! And everyone had at least one helping of 'blueberry-pancakes-and-blueberry-syrup'. Mmmmm...."The Inn". What more can I say? Alas, Ruth did not take shots of Dr. Kristoferson sitting at his table. I so vividly remember how long and yellow his fingernails were......do you? The video came from Ruth Webber's own personal 8mm movies she took at Blaney Park. You can see staff antics (Mary Margaret Earle calls it 'Dirty Dancing, Blaney Style') during the annual 'Paul Bunyan Day' plus the dining room, the grand buffet, Ruth's ubiquitous 'sunset' shots over the airport, some winter scenes of the Inn, 'The Bear's Den', and the snowbanks along the highway. Watch carefully and you can view a short snippet of her daughter Jane and grandson Fred at 'the pool". Brief appearance is also noted of a snow-covered 'Blaney Wagon'...parked next to where Tim's Trucks had it's origination. I have ended the six-minute video with a very rare shot of Blaney Park Resort owner Stewart E. Earle and his beloved poodle "Bo-Bo".....

Nearly all the photos here on this page came from Jim Surrell and his powerpoint presentation he made at the 2007 reunion. Some came from my personal collection, but most all are from Jim. I do have some actual Blaney Park stationary and menus, and handwritten signs my grandmother Ruth Webber made and may one day get them scanned in and put here. Does anyone still check this site???... ... I was surprised and saddened
to read of the passing of Mary Margaret Earle, in the Newberry News this
past week. I'm extra thankful now that the Blaney Reunion happened when
it did, and that I was fortunate enough to be a part of it all.

I have uploaded Ruth's 8mm Blaney Park video to Youtube. Here's what I
say on the short (6 min) video description: "It may be the only online
video depicting Blaney Park Resort (albeit very short video) 'as it
was', and definitely, 'as it SHOULD be'. " "Ruth Adams Webber was the
manager of "The Inn". All said and done, Blaney Park, Michigan had this
F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S restaurant that was 'run' by R.A.W. in the 50's and

some winter scenes of the Inn, 'The Bear's Den', and the snowbanks along
the highway. Watch carefully and you can view a short snippet of her
daughter Jane and grandson Fred at 'the pool". I have ended the
six-minute video with a very rare shot of Blaney Park Resort owner
Stewart E. Earle and his beloved poodle when the doggie was just a

in july 1980 my Delta 88 and I just passed. the resort was abandoned. I
took pictures of the office and tried to imagine how families spent
their holidays in this beautiful part of America. 20, 30 years ago. someday I'll rent a car and go back to visit again. I'm jealous on the
people who camped there when it was in business.

In early June 1949 I was traveling with four friends from the thumb area
and we just happened to stop in at Blaney. We saw tennis racquets on the
court and decided to play. We were stopped immediately and told that you
had to be a guest or an employee to play. I said "any jobs available?"
and was told yes as a bus boy. So I started the next day and my friends
went on their way. I had a great summer and was asked to come back the
next summer which I did. I went to Alma College. I have been through the
park and sad to see its condition - however my memorie are of a
wonderful time of life,

Well, thank you for the compliments....although it took me alot longer
than I thought it would, the photos and power point are at least
'in-the-proper-order'. :) I wish I would have been able to attend the
reunion.....I would have loved to rattle the dumb waiter ropes, KLANG on
the Hobart mixer bowls, hear the Finnish ladies in the dishwasher room,
and order another plate of blueberry pancakes & blueberry syrup. I'm
sure my grandmother (we called her 'Nanie') would have enjoyed the
reunion, as well. I can hear her laughing and see her nodding her head
in approval.....

Our family spent 2 weeks every July in Blaney Park starting in the early
1950's . I can remember staying in the large cottage on Lake Anne
Louise. Mom and dad would drop up off at the pool and play golf. Favorite place to go was the bear dump!!!! We still talk about what a
great time we had at B.P. at our family get togethers. We're sharing

Hello, I was not an employee of Blaney Park Resort, but have always been
very interested in the resort and it history. In fact, I was born in
1971 after the resort had closed. However, I have driven through Blaney
Park each and every holiday on the way to family in the U.P. My family
and I started staying with Darlene and Roger at the Celibeth House 3
years ago and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and history each time we are
there. We will be attending your reunion and are very interested in
hearing the stories of Blaney Park in its hey-day and more interesting
stories like the ones in this section of the website. I asked Mary
Margaret if I could post this in order to let people know that we will
be at the reunion and would like to hear your stories. We have a little
boy who is 22 months old and we will have a retro stroller. So, if you
see us, please introduce yourself as we will be happy to meet all of you
folks that were able to spend some priceless time at a very unique
resort. I also collect memoribilia and will bring some of the more
unique items to share. Thanks and look forward to the reunion. We will
be staying at the Celibeth House arriving late Friday night. Thanks,
Best, Steve

Sadly, I only remember the years driving through Blaney Park after it
had closed. I started staying at the Celibeth House Bed and Breakfast in
the late 80's and came back several times a year to see Elsa Strom and
the town of Blaney Park. I decided I had to be a part of the town, so I
bought the old Paul Bunyan Playhouse and am now going on my fourth
successful year. Friends of mine have purchased the old general store
and the pool house and are in the process of opening an antique store
and coffe house, and possibly an upscale gift shop. Blaney Park is
coming back to life. It may not be the GOOD OLD DAYS OF BLANEY PARK RESORT

I count myself as one of the luckiest of people to have so many
wonderful memories of growing up at Blaney, and all the great people
that were such a major (good) influence in those early years. But thru
all the memories (and I have many) the one that stands out also involves
my two cousins, Robert Earle and John Lungerhausen. We got it in our
heads to try smoking cig butts we found in one of the Blaney
stationwagons and we would have gotten away with it if I hadn't felt
sorry for our family dog 'Silver' who was hot so I filled up one of
those ice buckets with water for him but forgot to take it out of the
back of the stationwagon, opps! Needless to say My Grandfather, Stewart
yelled at my father thru his 'electric shaver', saying that the
employees "Had gone too far and had taken the vehicle out for a joy ride
with drinking involved without permission! " It was in fact sister Mary
who figured out it was me as I gave her my full confession! I sure
didn't want anyone to get in trouble over that and realized how much
trouble this had caused. I'm happy to say Iam cig-free and a practicing
Yogi for the last eight years. I recently recieved my Classical Yoga
certificate and will be leading an a.m. Yoga class at the Blaney Reunion
on Sunday. This will be free of charge and will be before breakfest, and
it will be a gentle class. See you there! Patty Earle

While my family was vacationing at Blaney in 1964, Dan Hanna, a
lifeguard, had his appendix removed. Big Bill Earle needed a new
lifeguard. So Steve Mitchel took this lad who just turned 16 and taught
him all he needed to know. At the guarry I learned you could drink beer
from an ice bucket. That you could sell more pop if you closed all the
windows at the playhouse during bingo. And last of all M-77 was a good
place to streak. For a lad of 16 I was in heaven.

I recently submitted my name as a Blaney "alumnus" in error. I regret to
report that I was never an employee at Blaney. My family and I traveled
to the U.P., from lower Wisconsin, to stay at Blaney for several years
in the 1960's. I became so excited, when my brother originally e-mailed
me this site, that I quickly sent in my name without being fully aware
of the site's/ reunion's purpose. After "joining" I then began to puruse
things further, reading some of the shared memories etc. I then quickly
learned that the Blaney reunion is for past employees of the resort and
not for folks who used to stay there. "Boy, was my face red..." I have
very fond memories of Blaney Park - cozy cabins, boat rides, the
delicious northwoods smells of the Lodge and the Inn, an evening group
excursion to scout for deer followed by a campfire in the woods,
swimming in the beautiful pool accompanied by the raucous strains of
"Jumpin' Jack Flash" blared over the loudspeaker over and over and
over... visits to the bear dump, and many walks (one that turned into 10
miles, with my dad!). I even recall a trip to the "big city" of
Manistique - to see a Jerry Lewis double feature at the drive-in
theatre. We needed to wrap up in blankets it was so cold that night -
and that was in August! In thinking back, Blaney Park must have exerted
a positive influence in my life since I've now been a U.P. resident
(Newberry/McMillan area) for 31 years! Thanks to all of you TRUE alumni,
who did so much back then toward creating a young girl's happy memories. Though I am not a true alum. of Blaney Park, I feel a bit like one - if
only at heart.

I worked at Blaney in 1961 and loved it! I was a busboy. I remember the
busboys being referred to as "being lower than fish p**p on the bottow
Lake Anne Louise" by the waitress. I was impressed by Jimmy Surrell's
dad's 1960 black six cylinder fuel enjected Mercedes Benz with a 160 mph
speedometer. I earned great money for those years!! I wondered if I out
earned some of the waitresses???? This message was ordered and edited by

I babysat for Jack and Barbara Earle one summer. My most vivid memory is
of the time that Jack took the two boys and me up in the small plane of
his and nosed it into a stall. The two boys went "Whee" - having the
time of their lives. And me? I was wondering where I might be able to
change my underware! Then came his little suggestion "Let's land on the
highway, Steph!" My eyes glazed over and my heart slowed into a death
beat as I rethought my intelligence at taking this little summer job ! I
also remember Barbara paying STRICT attention to how I completed all of
the tasks I was supposed to do- obviously I was lacking in my
presentation and production. ahem.

My memories are from 1959, 60, and 61. Me playing my Kingston Trio LPs
and driving the waitresses crazy, perky bows, working on our tans so we
could pass leg check and not have to wear nylons, the synchronized
swimming show we put on for the guests, Judy Marcolies dancing to Peter
Gun, Jai Gon's lobster dinner (my first introduction to lobstertail and
it is still a favorite treat), the Labor Day of 1960 when the downstate
waitresses had returned to home and college, and we were so busy with
the guests complaining that the cold food was warm and the hot food was
cold and all I wanted to do was to run out the back door and never
return, my 6 table of Chicago couples in 1960 who wrote a song abut the
watris, busboys, bellhops, etc. to the tune of Banana Boat Song and sang
it their last night in the dining room. I am looking forward to seeing
you in August!!

I feel compelled to throw this memory out there..and I will 'copy &
paste' on the web site "share memories" but I do certainly want to share
it with everyone whose e-mail I have been fortunate enough to have....
So it is 1965...at the end of a season...everyone is going to be split
up now...possibly forever, because the Earles were not going to operate
it anymore as a fully staffed Blaney Park Resort.. Anyway, I shared a
small room in the girls dorm above the Inn with Missy Fuller, and before
that night was over, guys were coming through the window to get to where
they wanted to go...and that was after we'd helped ourselves to some
incredible desserts. Sooo, the next morning, I appear at 7:00 am as that
was when 'my shift' started .. (( THAT YEAR I WAS 'ALLOWED' TO ACTUALLY
BE PART OF THE STAFF...I'd been waiting for years.. I am a deskclerk,
and I share Spider's shift...but we have a deal! As I am 18 and don't
drink (as yet), and he is 21 (or so) and definitely does...I come in,
and he comes in when I ring a certain ring on the 'hand crank' phone
that connected major points on the property. But this time, I am really
surprised...)) I walk into the lodge lobby, and Spider is lying, face
down, on one of the couches (you know, maple & cushions) as you
enter...and Joe Wolf is lying, face up, on another. Dora, the head of
housekeeping, is looking at them...she seemed ancient to me at the time,
but she probably wasn't over 50... I walk in, Dora looks at me, and
says, giggling..."I guess these boys are napping".. I was only 18, but I
knew they were not napping! Memories are made of this! MaryM

Oh, where to start. I worked (is that the correct term) at Blaney for
the four summers of 1962-1965. The first summer I was just out of high
school. Unfortunately (or, maybe, fortunately) my sister, Susan was up
there that first summer also, and she felt that her main function there
was to monitor my actions, and to rein me in just when things were
getting fun. I remember learning many valuable lessons that first summer
from Steve Loftus and Jim Surrell, who I thought ran the place until
Bill and Jack Earle assurred me that the Earles ran the place. My
greatest memories are of all the great young people who worked there -
people who knew how to work, had been taught good values, but most
importantly, also knew how to party! Remember the party spots - This is
where Surrel and Loftus came in, introducing me to such spots as
Michi-Bay, the well, the quarry, and Maxine's bar. I also have wonderful
memories of the "full-timers" who worked there and how great they were
with us kids. Harry Anderson, Eddie Store, Ray and Vi Garbage, Ray Flynn
(the bartender), 6-pack Ray the accountant, all the ladies in house
keeping (I particularly remember Lena from Germfask), the cooks and
helpers in the Inn, and of course, Bill and Jack Earle. I remember many
a night that Bill stopped off at our dorm above the store for a quick
beer before heading home. And there was also one night every summer when
we'd talk Jack into loading up D.B., Frobs, the Wolff, and me (and
various others) into his little Pinto station wagon along with a case of
beer from Eddie's store and take us out to the quarry. After many great
Blaney stories (all told by Jack) and all the beer was gone, we'd all
strip down and swim out to the boiler. The amazing thing was there was
always a guy or two who really couldn't swim, but after enough beer,
everyone always made it out to the boiler and back! Always a good thing
to have D.B. with us because he was a state champion in swimming, and he
did know how to swim! Note I said Jack only did this once a year with
us, because his wife, Barb would always be so pi**ed off at him when we
finally came home that Jack would be pretty well grounded for the rest
of the summer. Am looking forward greatly to the reunion. Just made my
plane reservations today. How about you other reprobates - Frobs, the
Wolff, D.B. Fire up!!!! Any body hear from Connie Erickson (Cuddles),
Tom Davis, Stump, two-beer Bob, Suzi Cory, Bill (Punger) Plummer, Greg
the life guard, Karen playground, Deboar, Mary Jo, Tee Hee, Jerri
Johnson, Janie, Becky Collings, all the Earle kids, etc. I've already
seen the messages from the old stalwarts, Roz, Mary E., Steve, Bunny and
Mike, Surrel, Marlyn, Loftus, George Earle etc. Can't wait to see
everyone. I'm just looking at my old Blaney album, and I came across a
keg financial statement on Blaney stationary. I see back on July 15,
1965, the going rate for the guys was $1.00, for the gals $.50 and for
Pete and 2-beer Bob, $.50. I have some great pictures which I will bring
to the reunion. I' m looking forward to seeing everyone, and of course
being back in the magical place called Blaney Park! Of course, I'll
bring my Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Simon and Garfunkle
C.D.'s Spider

Blaney has many faces for me. Micky Lee was our bus driver and at Blaney
we would pick up young Bill and Jackie, the Mclouds and Ron Colegrove
were next. If you wanted to stay on the bus you could ride up to Seul
Choix where Stone Wall lived. We were all great friends at the Muller
School, mother cooked with Mrs. Freeland and for a summer or two Tish
and mother worked together at Blaney. Ron and I rammed all over from
lumber barns to the fire tower and the pool was our second home with Dan
Hanna as life guard. The meals were to die for and Tish had Ron working
in the commissary sending up supplies. Thats where we found the Parrot
wine. Corby. A few years later Stone and I worked for Charlie B. washing
windows and screens for every building. I made $100 in one day as a
bellhop. I worked at the laundry, mowed greens and fairways, washed pots
and pans for chef Ralph, woked nights running the dish washer, and
finaled out with the pastry chef. At one time the McNiel brothers and I
stayed all night to clean the kitchen, but during the work we decided to
send one down the laundry chute (downstairs was locked) and he came up
with a 5 gallon keg of Hamms. Eddie the Fox kept Charlie from canning
us. Where is Cheryl Pierce, her friend who dated Ralphs assistant who
crashed up by the norty Blaney line. Tish, I know my mother had the
highest respect and regard for you and we all love you. TJL

The summer of 1944 will always be remembered as one of the best times of
my life. My friend, David Watson, had been hired as a lifeguard for the
pool at Blaney Park Resort and he convinced me that I should also apply
there for a summer job. David's father was a commercial forester, and
acquainted with the Earle family, and I am sure that played a part in our
ability to get our jobs, he at the pool and me washing dishes and
scrubbing pots & pans. We had a great work crew made up of young people
from Manistique, Gulliver, Germfask, Newberry and surrounding area. Blaney was always noted for their hard working and good looking
waitresses, and that year was no exception. Remember--that was the year
that Bill Earle courted Nada, who he later married. Jack Earle showed up
at the resort in mid June and immediately became the idol of all the
rest of the girls. Bill and Jack were great workers and played a great
part in the success that the resort experienced over the years. Jack and
I became good friends over the years and when he would return to the UP
he would stop in for a visit or give me a call so we could know what
each other had been up to. I have a hundred great stories of the summer
of 1944 and would like to share many of them with you---like the chef
that each morning and each afternoon would send us to the bar to get a
bottle of sherry to use in his "cooking" (he lasted less than 1 month),
serving as a guide at the Dude Ranch, trips to the bear dump, picnics at
Simmons Woods, playing golf not knowing one club from another, all sorts
of foolish games we played in and around the pool, Mrs. Webber and HER
dinning room, trips to Gulliver to meet the Soo Line and pick up guests
and learning to dance to the great orchestras they had each weekend--You
must remember they allowed us to use and enjoy the property almost like
the other guest did. Our work in the dishwater required us to work two
meals and then be off two meals, providing us with lots of time to enjoy
the other activities. The day I will remember started after we had
worked the breakfast shift. We were returning to the Celibeth Inn, where
we lived on the third floor, when one of my co-workers noticed a fishing
pole leaning against the building. Evidently one of the guests had
checked out and forgot to put the pole in their car. My friend took the
pole up to his room and then decided it would be better if he stored it
in the attic off our living area. Later in the day he returned with some
worms and suggested that we take the newly acquired pole and go down to
Lake Ann Louise and catch some bullheads. I volunteered to get the pole
from its hiding place while he changed his shoes. I was walking on the
trusses to get the pole when my foot slipped off and went through the
lathe and plaster ceiling of the guest room below. As I pulled my leg
out of the hole I noticed one of the guests on the bed below now covered
with dust, plaster, part of the ceiling paper and a huge look of
surprise on her face. Needless to say, the fishing trip was off and we
quickly disappeared from the Inn wondering what was going to happen to
us. We never head a word from management or our boss regarding the
incident. Harry Anderson and his 2 man crew showed up and promptly
repaired the damage. The word spread quickly among the crew, and over
the years many versions of that day were in circulation, Many years
later, while working at my desk, I received a phone call from the
resort. A lady introduced herself, I cannot remember he name, but she
reminded me she was the person having her afternoon nap when my foot
entered her room. She invited me to join her for lunch at the Inn so
that we could have a visit and relive that famous day. I am sure that
she has told the story many many times and 1944 will always be a year
that she and I will long remember. We had lunch 2 or 3 more times and
had a good laugh each time. I arrived at Blaney in early June with a
couple of bucks in my pocket and left in late August to start football
practice with a couple of bucks in my pocket after working all summer. Money could never as valuable as the great memories of washing dishes
and scrubbing pots and pans at Blaney Park Resort. Clyde L Strasler

Mary Earle told me I should share this little memory with you. When I
was a bartendress, Blaney had a convention for the Bankers. I was
surprised when they requested that the bar be opened by 10:00 a.m. Blaney also hosted the U.P. Road Builders and that was a wild time in
the bar in the evenings, but they waited until the bar opened at our
regular time!

ONE VIVID MEMORY I HAVE HAPPENED AT THE POOL. A LITTLE BOY,PROBABLY
ABOUT 5 OR 6 CAME OUT OF THE MEN'S DRESSING ROOM AND WALKED RIGHT OVER
TO THE HIGH DIVE AND STARTED UP THE LADDER. WE WERE ALL QUITE SURPRISED
AND THEN HIS MOM CAME OUT JUST AS HE WAS ABOUT TO JUMP AND SHE LET OUT A
SCREAM BECAUSE HE COULDN'T SWIM!ONE OF THE TALL, SLIM WAITRESSES DOVE
RIGHT IN AND GOT HIM OUT!i DON'T REMEMBER WHO SHE WAS BUT I'LL BET SHE
REMEMBERS. THIS WAS THE SUMMER OF 1947. i STAYED ON THE 3RD FLOOR OF THE
LODGE WITH THE OTHER GIRLS WHO WORKED IN THE KITCHEN.I WASHED GLASSES BY
HAND BECAUSE THE DISHWASHER DIDN'T ALWAYS GET THE LIPSTICK SMEARS OFF IN
THE REGULAR DISHWASHING MACHINES. MY GRANDFATHER WAS THE NIGHT WATCHMAN
FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND HE LIVED IN BEAVER BILL'S CABIN WHERE THE TROUT
PONDS WERE. HE ALSO HAD A COUPLE OF TAME DEER LIKE DR.C. THAT WAS AN
ENJOYABLE SUMMER AND I THINK I SPENT MOST OF MY WAGES RIDING THE HORSES! ANNE

To: Abbygail Purdy Kahn - now that you know about this website & also
the one on the banner below, there's no excuse for not contributing a
few words about your time at Blaney. Be sure & include the things you
wouldn't tell Connie & Max!! Also check out the pictures in the
Alumnac.com Class of 1961. There are several of you, Judy Smith & Steve
Loftus. Nick Modders - good to see your entry - I'm looking forward to
seeing you at the Reunion and also at Oshkosh the end of July. I'm glad
to see the increased activity on this site and also on the Alumnac.com
site. I'm hoping some more pictures will get posted. Mike Ennis (1957 -

Ahhh, Blaney Park, what pleasant summer memories. I worked as a Bellhop
for a summer and a half. The half summer was because of being at AFROTC
summer camp. Being at Blaney was a lot better than summer camp. Midnight
rowboat rides on Lake Ann Louise, rolling Bill Earle's VW bus from his
driveway to out on the golf course, helping guest pilots with their
airplanes and getting a couple of airplane rides, etc. are cherished
memories. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. Nick Modders

The summers of '64 and '65 provided me with many wonderful and
unforgetable memories. I had always been a 'wall-flower' while growing
up and Blaney provided me with a safe atmosphere in which to spread my
wings. Thank you Peter, Steve, Dave, Spider, Joe( for telling me about
Blaney during a group date at Lake Erie College), Marilyn (Tee Hee where
are you?), Kathy, Roz, P.J., Rick (my busboy), and Rob. I will be
thinking about you all on the 18th. Any of you, guys, want "The Pit"
sign ?I happen to have it! Hmmm, I can't remember how we actually stole
it from your area. First one to let me know gets it. Brook

This is just to let everyone know I posted a few more pictures on the
Alumnac site. Just lick on the moving link below & then on "b" & then on
"Blaney" in the "b" schools. Most of the pictures are under the Class of
1961 even though some were taken other years. There are also 3 photos
under Class of 1960. Fran Bernier: I was glad to see you posted a
"Memory" but sorry to hear you are apparently not going to make the
reunion. I think you had better rethink your decision!! Who knows if we
will have another opportunity like this? We had some great times there
together & I've got some pictures to prove it!! Your brother Ed is in
some as well. Thank you to the Blaneyites who have let me know they have
found my pictures & seem to be enjoying them. I have quite a few more &
will post them as time permits. There have to be some other great
pictures "out there" & hopefully the owner will post them or send them
to me & I'll scan them & return your originals. The last two pictures I
posted in 1961 were compliments of Judy Smith (1959 - 1962) & Judy I'll
be returnig your originals soon. Regards to all, Mike (1957 - 1961)

I was only at Blaney one summer, but so many memories are still vivid! As in the time I was just a wee hungover and spilled tomato juice in
dramatic fashion all over two lovely elderly ladies at breakfast. And
how much fun we had making up songs and dances to entertain the guests
(to entertain ourselves, really). And how I began to learn to play the
guitar that summer and am sure I drove everyone around me crazy with
plunking at it. And the time we learned that Mrs. Weber could listen in
to conversations in the girls' dorms. We were watching TV and her voice,
coming from a loudspeaker, suddenly demanded, "What is a MAN doing in
your room, ladies!" We responded very smugly, "It's just the TV, Mrs. Weber." "Oh," said she, and that was that! And at the end of the summer,
everyone had to go back to college before I did, so I ended up working
in the bar, a new experience for me. A guest asked for a Beefeaters with
a lemon twist -- and I was afraid to ask the bartender for it because I
was sure the guest was making fun of me and the bartender would laugh! My goodness, I wouldn't mind being young and carefree and going back to
work at Blaney for one more summer! Even if it would mean wearing that
dreadful waitri outfit with the foolish hat . . . . Looking forward to
seeing everyone again, Susan

When I was born in June of 47, my parents Bill & Naida Earle had been
married a year after meeting while both working at Blaney Park. Very
nearly every memory I have from 47-67, when Grampa sold the resort (the
first time) revolved around Blaney and the terrific people that I was
exposed to during those fabulous years that did not remotely resemble
reality! I went on to have a great career in producing everything from
conventions to tv commercials as a result of my experiences and exposure
to people who created 'happenings' daily basically out of nothing but
their own creativity and youthful enthusiasm. I am looking forward to
many of those inspirational people getting together this August 18th! The energy will be amazing!!

The Blaney experience was memorable to say the least. So many super
people, so little time to spend with them. I will never forget my
bellhop days -- earning decent money, but spending it all before I left. Fun, fun, fun. I have spent a career advising college and high schools
students, and it's a blast seeing how things have, and have not,
changed. Many thanks to Mike and Bunny for all they did to make Blaney
special and for their efforts to pull this reunion together.I will not
be there in body, but will be in spirit -- you know what I mean!

Sticky cinnamon buns. Bears and beer at the garbage dump. The

What fun. I was a part of RW's waitri crew during the summers of 1964
and 1965 and also had the opportunity to take a couple of long weekend
breaks from Alma College and drive up to work the goose and deer hunting
seasons as well as waitress and barmaid. After 30 years of living near
Lake Michigan in southwest MI, working for MDOT, and successfully
raising ten children who are now all college graduates, I am in the
process of divesting myself of collections and accumulations and am
moving to Farmington Hills in the southeastern portion of MI. As so many
have mentioned we had a fabulous opportunity that I was sorry was not
available for my kids during their college years. Those years led to a
deep appreciation of all that the UP offers. Looking forward to seeing
everyone in August. PS - As Mary Margaret mentioned, I am in the process
of compiling a recipe book - hopefully some of those wonderful treats
Tish put together that we loved to "scarf" on the back porch - Mary,
I've made the Key Lime Pie recipe for years and it will be included. If
anyone has some favorites, please email them to me or snail mail to P.O. Box 1833, Warren MI 48090. Lynn (Roz Lewis) Hayes

I was a waitress at Blaney in '61, '62 & '63. What fun - didn't consider
it a job at all. Between this site and all the e-mails, the memories are
just flooding back. One of my favorites was grilled steak night at the
beach. Being a steak lover at the time, and a beach bum forever, I
really looked forward to my turn to "work" there. Another favorite
memory is Key Lime Pie. We used to scarf that down on the back porch
whenever possible. I was so happy to see in one e-mail that the recipe
(and others) will be available to us in some form of cookbook. Regarding
Tish, I still marvel at how she was able to keep all of those breakfast
orders straight (3 on 1 with a side of bacon, etc., etc., etc.). Definitely a gift! And thank heavens for the invention of Decaf coffee -
I remember having to make that awful Sanka stuff!! I haven't seen Cilla
West's name anywhere. Has anyone heard from her? I hope to make it to

Greetings to Tish, Sheila, Sam, Kay and Jackie, So happy to read you
shared memories on the Blaney website!! I'm responding to all of you as
a member of the reunion steering committee and a former Blaneyite! :-)
Tish, what a wonderful surprise that you will be able to attend the
reunion! We (Mike Ennis, my husband) have some good pictures of you in
the kitchen with other employees. One has Jai Gon in it. Sure wish we
could find him so he could be with us in August! Sheila, we are happy to
know you are in contact with the Steering Committee! It was going to be
my job to find you when you wrote Mary Earle! We are hoping you will
attend! Sam, we have several pictures of you too. Do you remember
attending a mini reunion somewhere downstate? You are in some of the
pictures with Johnny Stuet, Mike and I, Judy McDonald, Donna W. and Pam
?. Kay, thanks for looking up Judy Smith's Alma current address. We did
connect with her. She now lives in Washington state and is
enthusiastically planning on joining us for the Blaney Park Reunion
2007! We are looking forward to seeing you and Steve too!!! Jackie, we
didn't realize you worked so many years at Blaney. :-) We would say that
you are right when you said your sister, Barbara, TRIED to keep an "eye"
on you all those years. I think Mrs. Webber knew who was going to be
"okay" and sent the rest packing. Guess we proved her right! :-) Anyway,
I'm sure you will have so many former Blaneyites to get caught up with! My fear is that we will all be in shock at how much we have all changed
in 40-50 years!!!!!! We are planning on having name badges! Think that
will help? Keep an "eye" on this site for any future plans. Our next
phase will be to post the registration form that we will all have to
copy and mail to a specific address. Jim Surrell is now working on the
form. Mary Margaret Earle is designing a Tee-shirt that we all will have
a option to buy or not to buy. Anyway, thanks for responding! We are
hearing from many former employees on e-mail. Maybe they, too, will
write a shared memorie and let others know they will be attending! Hint,
Hint!! At. this point we are looking forward to at least 100 of the
Faithful! Keep looking for more former employees and give them the
reunion information! Bunny McMillan Ennis '59,'60,'61. I was a waitress
in '59 & '60 and a barmaid in '61.

breakfast chef. I worked in all of the departments, expecially for
banquets and weddings. I worked with Mrs. Webber, Rachel McNeil, Vinnie
LaRose, Marie McLeod, Roy Pohlman, Martha Smith, Eddie Archey, Shirley
Kelly, Wilbur LaBar and many, many more. During the winter months I
babysat for some of the Earle children. I have memories of being in a
play at the Playhouse, wearing grass skirts with the Mueller ladies
singing Mangwa, Nicaragwa - Olay. My children also worked there. They
enjoyed riding horses, swimming, croquet, and all the wonderful
activities at the park. In April I will be 93 years old. I am looking
forward to the reunion and seeing everyone. Tish

Heard about the reunion from my brother via the Escanaba Daily Press,
took a month to get to me from the UP. I worked the summer of 60 in the
General Store for Ed Roland and stayed in the plush Celibeth basement. Hadn't thought much about my summer there till I saw the reunion
announcement, although I frequently go thru Blaney. Hope to be able to
make the reunion. Great idea!

When I first left a memory note here, we could not put in our email
address, so I am adding it now. It is so exciting to hear from all of
you who have left a memory, and other emails. The response to the Blaney
Reunion is most gratifying. We are all anxious to see you all in August. Jim Surrell

When Mike Ennis called me last evening, it was like a trip down memory
lane, remembering the wonderful summers at Blaney Park. I was there in
59,60,61 and 62. The first two years as a waitress and then a barmaid. I
can't believe that we actually got paid for having so much fun. The
guests, staff, facilities etc. were wonderful. I look forward to the
reunion and to renewing old friendships and to hearing from you all. Thanks for having this reunion. Judy p.s. we are the girls of the Blaney
follies.....and rabbit , rabbit to all

I was a waitress in 1960,61 and 62. Great memories. Steve and I grew to
love the UP and now have a cabin near Gulliver. For Bunny, the last
address I have for Judy Smith, from the 2002 Alma College Alumni
Directory, is Judy Oakes, 3194 Blue Hill Ave., Gallup, NM, 87301,

I began spending my nine years at Blaney during the summer of 1956. My
sister Barbara had just married Jack Earle and she thought if I spent
summers under her watchful eye, she could better control my comings and
goings. Well, it sounded good at the time! My first four summers were
spent oogling the older crowd, wishing I could fraternize with them. From 1960 through 1964, I worked as the Playground Supervisor, Waitress
and Bar Maid/Bar Tender. It was a wonderful time and I look forward to
seeing everyone and taking that trip down memory lane.

Donna shared these thoughts in a note to Bunny: "I was excited to read
of the planned Blaney reunion in Aug. I was a waitress there in the 50's
and my husband was a caddy in the 40's. We certainly will attend, the
Lord willing. We both lived in the Manistique area when we were employed
there." Bunny

Virginia wrote to Bunny Ennis, "I worked at Blaney during the summer of
1937 and we all had a wonderful time working and playing afterwards --
especially using the swimming pool after the Inn closed at night." "I
imagine a lot of those early employees are no longer with us, but it
would be nice to see them if they are-- gray hair, false teeth and all." Now, there is a great Blaney attitude!!! Bunny

I've already shared a few memories but wasn't able to include my e-mail. That has now been corrected. So, the reason for the message is to add my
addresses and telephone number. Looking forward to seeing many of you at
the reunion!

My dad, when he was a young man, worked at the stable and took guests on
rides. Later on my parents purchased the Sportsman's Grill about a mile
down US-2 and made many friends from the Resort. Guests, family and
employees. My working experience was being Michelle Earle's babysitter. It was a wonderful place for all types of people.

I was a waitress in 1959 and 1960 and a bar maid in 1961. Wonderful
years. I have so many good memories it's hard to condensed them. I loved
sitting on the dining room stage and singing while waiting for the
guests to arrive! I think that was a favorite because I cannot carry a
tune! Bonfires at Lake Michigan, eating forbidden foods from the
kitchen, Paul Bunyan Days, meeting new friends etc., etc., etc., Let's
talk about all this at the reunion. Does anyone know how to contact Judy
Smith? She and I were barmaids together in 1961. I sure would like to
see her again. Do you think we can still do the Blaney Follies???? Kick
our legs like the Rockettes?? Looking forward to seeing all who can
attend!! I'm hoping I can add a P.S. I just read Fred Ahlborn's message
and YES I have great memories of you grandmother, Ruth Webber. She had
such a great sense of humor if she liked you, but look out if you did
something to get on or bad side. She sure did make sure we waitresses
had "Perky" bows on or uniforn aprons! She ran a great dining room. I
learned many life values from her; courtesy, promptness, efficiency, how
to set a correct table, how to work hard and enjoy it plus so much more. We'll talk about it August 18 and 19th. Okay??

I started at Blaney as a busboy. Somehow I was able to talk Mrs. Webber
into letting me also be a waiter. Being the only waiter, I of course,
then told all my guests that I was the Blaney Park "Head Waiter". The
next year I was a desk clerk, and then Social Director. Having had so
much fun, I still feel somewhat guilty that I accepted a paycheck for my
time at Blaney. Can't wait for the reunion! See you there.

My grandmother, Ruth Webber, was the boss at the Inn. Do you have any
memories of her? I am the webmaster for this site, too...hope it helps
bring back those Blaney memories!
