Costilla County β The Colorado Department of Transportation, in partnership with Capital Teams Construction, will resume work on the safety mitigation project along US Highway 160 east of Fort Garland on April 20. Crews will return to complete backfilling, grading work and installation of additional game fencing. This season's work will also include new resurfacing of approximately two miles of highway immediately east of Fort Garland from Mile Point 258.4 to 260.4. Final work tasks will wrap up with new pavement markings and signage. Shoulder closures are expected from milepoint 262.74 to MP 262.93 beginning April 13 as traffic control crews re-install electronic message boards. The project is scheduled for completion in June.
Construction on the safety improvement project began March 2025 and spans from Fort Garland eastward for seven miles (Mile Points 258 to 265). Work completed during the first season of construction included acceleration and deceleration lanes, intersection improvements at US 160 and Trinchera Ranch Road, installation of three wildlife underpasses, deer fencing along both sides of US 160, earthen escape ramps throughout the fenced corridor and deer guards or gates at access points.
