This is a wonderful and important event that will help all parents and guardians learn valuable information about online safety and keeping our children safe. Everyone is welcome to attend! Not only do the kids learn important information, but I’m sure plenty of us, as adults, will learn plenty too!

One of the biggest threats facing our youth today is not only physical threats or abuse, but abuse that occurs from the safety of one's own home. Kids can be exposed to all sorts of things every time they log onto the internet from their computer, gaming system, cell phone, or other electronic devices.

We, as parents, try to keep up with all of the latest technology and applications that could be used to prey on our children, but it isn't easy to know what is safe and what is not safe anymore.

Sgt. Marc Pilote has devoted a good portion of his law enforcement career to tracking down child predators. As the department's Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force Officer, he not only attempts to catch those who wish to do harm to our children on the internet, but he also educates children and families about some of the things to look out for online.

Sgt. Pilote has taught several classes over the years to Union County Middle School students, emphasizing the importance of online safety and awareness. This year, he is joining with the Union County School System to teach this class at the Middle School, High School, and Woody Gap School on October 6th during school hours. Many of you may have received something from the school telling you about this opportunity for your child to learn about the importance of online safety.

Something that Sgt. Pilote has added this year is going to be a block of instruction for the parents as well! On October 6th from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., Sgt. Pilote will be teaching this course for parents at the Union County Fine Arts Center. Topics include: Cyber Safety, Sharing Personal Information Online, Sexting, Online Predators, Georgia Law, Drugs, Va**ng, and Alcohol Awareness. Sgt. Pilote brings a wealth of knowledge about these topics, so if you have time to stop by, we would love to see you there! Our children are our most important asset. Please join us in helping to ensure their online safety as well as their physical well-being!

Prayers are definitely needed for this officer, his family, and the McCaysville Police Department.

Last night, a McCaysville Police Officer was shot while responding to a call for service. He remains in critical condition. We ask that you keep him, his family, and his children in your prayers.

We ask everyone to join us in lifting up Chief Michael Earley, the McCaysville Police Department, and the officers still working to bring the person responsible for this senseless act to justice.
