The Blairstown Historic Preservation Committee (BHPC) was formed in 2001 through the efforts of two Blairstown history advocates - the late historian Helen Hall and Blairstown Township Mayor, the late Anita Ardia. The BHPC was established as a sub-committee of the Blairstown Township Committee and members of our organization are volunteers who are appointed by the Mayor with advice and consent of the Township Committee. We have provided 20 years of service to the community, preserving Blairstown's history and artifacts. For clarification, the Blairstown Historic Preservation Committee and the Blairstown Museum are not affiliated with each other. Through BHPC's outreach programs, displays, traveling exhibits, walking tours and lectures, we create awareness of our local history with schools and civic organizations. We collaborate and share information with neighboring historic societies and commissions in Warren County. Accomplishments that have been achieved by our committee over the years include: the establishment of the village of Blairstown on the State and National Registry of Historic Places (includes 177 structures in the historic district); grounds and headstone restoration at the Gravel Hill Cemetery (adjacent to Blair Academy and Main Street); and the establishment of informational plaques placed on the landmark buildings of Blairstown's historic Main Street. Residents and visitors are welcome to take one of our guided walking tours held throughout the year or stroll along Main Street and take a self-guided walking tour of the historic district. Walking tour maps are available at the municipal building, library, and businesses throughout the town. Our artifacts are acquired through donations and housed at the Blairstown Municipal building. Our artifact displays can be viewed at the Blairstown Township Municipal Building, 106 Rt. 94, Blairstown, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. Special arrangements can be made for viewing displays outside of normal operating hours, arranging group walking tours, and making artifact donations by contacting us via Facebook message or by e-mailing [email protected].
