The Westman Farm on Dakota Creek

The Westman Farm on Dakota Creek Charming 5 acre, waterfront hobby farm. The waterfront property located at 4358 West Road in Blaine WA is steeped in Icelandic history.

The land known to the locals as "The Westman Farm on Dakota Creek," was purchased in 1925 by John and Rannveig Westman (formerly Johnson), who were named after Westmann Island in Iceland. John was a farmer and raised chickens, sheep and dairy cows. He and his wife and raised his three children in a two room house which was originally located under the large cedar that is still standing proudly in

the grassy pasture. In 1929, Siggi Sigurnson moved into the two room house with the Westmans with plans to build them a new and larger house. Siggi was an Icelandic Itinerant carpenter. He built a handful of homes in the Blaine area, with the arrangement to live with the families as he built their homes. Some of Siggi's carpentry trademarks are the curved dome entries found in the dining room, as well as the hand sculpted, beveled ceilings found in the living and dining rooms. Rannveig loved red geraniums so Siggi built her the glass room entrance at the back of the house. The house is just feet from Dakota Creek and can be seen from the deck, dining room, kitchen and upstairs bedroom. Dakota Creek is a salt water creek that follows with the tide tables. Salmon, Coho and Chinook spawn in the creek every year. Once in a while you will see a harbor seal feeding on the end of the season bounty. Eagles have nested along this creek and are quite entertaining to watch from the kitchen window while the adults teach the young how to hunt. There is a trail leading down to the bank of the creek to go salmon fishing, have small camp fires for summer s'mores or to launch a kayak for a leisure trip. There is a naturally fed Artisan Spring feeding the farm with water that is hydro-statically moved to the house from a 760 foot well. This well was drilled by the shaker mill that was located on Dakota Creek in early 1900's. This water was used by John Westman to feed his family and livestock, and is still being used today for that same purpose. For the past 11 years the property has been a hobby farm to raise organic, grass fed Angus, Cornish hens, pigs and layer chickens, as well as house an antique tractor collection. This property has been owned by members of the same family since 1925. It is difficult to not be part of this rich history when you step onto the property.
