WATER CONSERVATION REQUEST
Jefferson Water & Sewer District is experiencing high water demand due to increased outdoor watering as a result of the current high temperatures. We are also experiencing a 20% reduction in our water treatment capacity due to a filter in the water plant that failed, and it is scheduled for repair starting June 19th. We are currently operating the water plant 24/7 and we are producing as much water as possible, but we are having a difficult time keeping our water towers filled.
I am writing to ask for your help by reducing your outdoor water usage – now during these high temperatures and continuing these practices all summer.
Just by following the suggestions listed below, you will help reduce the overall water consumption. This will allow us to supply water to all of our customers for outdoor watering this summer, while still keeping our water reserves in our towers.
1. Water your lawn, landscape plants, and gardens only on specific days based on your address:
a. Odd number house address (ie: 3151) only water on Monday, Wednesday & Friday
b. Even number house address (ie: 3044) only water on Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday
c. No one waters on Sunday to give our towers a chance to fill
2. Reduce the number of days you water – Only water 2 days per week instead of 3 but stick to your days as described in #1 above. During very long hot spells your grass may not have that plush green color, but the lawn will remain healthy and return to its deep green color with a good rain.
3. Only water your lawn for 45 minutes each time you water. Watering early in the morning will allow the water to soak into the grass roots while watering in the afternoon results in a significant amount of water evaporating due to the hot sun. Please water when the sun is at its lowest.
4. For new sod, only water for 20 minutes each time, twice per day, and only for 12 weeks. New sod will take root by then and then only needs water as described above.
If everyone voluntarily follows the suggestions listed above, we should be able to provide high-quality water for all your summer needs. Thank you in advance for your help by doing your part to reduce your outdoor water usage.
