Position Title
Library Clerk
Reports To
Library Director
Position Summary
The Library Clerk provides friendly and efficient customer service to library patrons while assisting with daily library operations. This position supports circulation services, shelving and organizing materials, basic technology assistance, and general clerical duties to help maintain a welcoming and organized library environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Check library materials in and out using the library circulation system
• Assist patrons with locating books, movies, audiobooks, and other library resources
• Answer phones and respond to general patron questions
• Issue library cards and update patron records
• Shelve and organize library materials according to established procedures
• Process returned materials and inspect for damage
• Assist with displays, bulletin boards, and promotional materials
• Help patrons use computers, printers, scanners, Wi-Fi, and other basic technology
• Collect fines, fees, and payments when applicable
• Maintain neatness and organization throughout the library
• Assist with library programs, events, and outreach activities as needed
• Follow library policies and confidentiality requirements regarding patron records
• Perform other duties as assigned by library administration
Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Previous customer service experience preferred
• Basic computer and office equipment knowledge
• Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patrons of all ages
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to alphabetize and understand basic filing systems
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods
• Ability to lift and carry library materials weighing up to 25 pounds
• Ability to push book carts and move materials throughout the library
Preferred Skills
• Familiarity with library circulation software
• Experience working with children, teens, or seniors
• Interest in literacy, community engagement, and public service
Work Environment
Work is performed in a public library setting with frequent interaction with patrons, staff, and community members. Evening and weekend hours will be required.
Anticipated Hours: Monday-Thursday 3:00-6:00 PM (Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday)
Friday: 2:00-5:00(Every other Friday)
Saturday: 10:00-2:00 (Every other opposite Saturday)
