Taylor Fall Festival,
Taylor, Wisconsin, c.1954.
Taylor’s annual village celebration originated as a Fall Festival in the early part of the 1900’s, and continued as Old Fashioned Days from 1962-2019. This photo from 1954 was taken on 2nd street in Taylor, in front of the Dolly Madison root b**r stand. A carnival swing ride can be seen in the background on the Main Street Midway. The parade float, a tractor pulling a manure spreader is full of helmeted businessmen and local dignitaries. “Some Load Of ????, We Can Spread It”, is written on the side, perfectly capturing the high spirited pride and good humor of Old Fashioned Days!

From the Jackson County Historical Society Archives....

On Fillmore Street, Black River Falls — 1890s

This photo shows Fillmore Street in Black River Falls during the 1890s. The prominent building in the photo is the Merchant Hotel, which stood at the intersection of South First and Fillmore Streets.

Today, this location is home to the Black River Falls Post Office. The Merchants Hotel was razed in the 1938 to make way for construction of the new post office, which was built in 1938 and occupied in 1939.

But part of the old hotel survived. The back wing of the Merchants Hotel was moved down South First Street, where it was converted into an apartment building.

A fascinating reminder that even when historic buildings disappear from their original locations, pieces of their history can sometimes still be found elsewhere in the community.
