Valley Rewind: This 1912 photograph shows the destruction along Sutton and Cherry Streets following a major fire that devastated downtown Black Mountain.

Late on the night of November 12, 1912, a fire broke out in Bradham Furniture Store and quickly spread through the town's business district. Residents formed bucket brigades in an attempt to contain the blaze, while the Asheville Fire Department was called in to assist. The fire was finally brought under control in the early morning hours after destroying several buildings. Fortunately, no lives were lost.

The disaster underscored the need for local fire protection and helped spur the creation of the Black Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, which was officially organized by 1919. In 1962, the department hired its first two full-time employees marking a new chapter in the town's commitment for public safety.

Today we're celebrating with this photograph of Mr. Green, taken around 1960. Mr. Green was the owner of Hol'N One Donuts on Cherry Street, a favorite stop for fresh donuts in Black Mountain.

🥃 Happy National Moonshine Day! 🥃

Today we're raising a mason jar to one of Western North Carolina's most colorful traditions. This photograph shows a moonshine still near Catawba Falls, a reminder of the ingenuity, resourcefulness, and determination that helped shape life in the Southern Appalachians.

For generations, mountain families supplemented their income by producing moonshine in hidden hollows and remote coves throughout the region. While often operating outside the law, moonshining became an important part of the cultural and economic history of Western North Carolina.

Whether you're interested in local history, Appalachian traditions, or the stories behind the legends, National Moonshine Day is the perfect time to remember this unique chapter of mountain heritage.
