🔔 Meet Our Bell Ringer: Steve Martinez 🔔

At the June 10, 2026 Black Hawk City Council meeting, we were proud to recognize Steve Martinez, Maintenance Supervisor for the City of Black Hawk, as our ceremonial bell ringer.

Steve has played an important role in keeping our community running smoothly, and we appreciate his dedication, hard work, and commitment to serving Black Hawk.

When asked what he enjoys most about Black Hawk, Steve shared:

"The City has always treated me like a person, not just a number."

Thank you, Steve, for everything you do for our community!

Black Hawk has a few watchful namesakes keeping an eye on the City.

Artist Sandy Scott’s Black Hawk sculptures capture the power, grace, and presence of these iconic birds in a way that feels perfectly at home in the Rocky Mountains. One overlooks North Clear Creek from the Mill Street pedestrian bridge, appearing to scan the water below, while its sister sculpture stands watch at Hidden Treasure Trailhead.

Together, they form the only pair of matching sculptures in Black Hawk and are popular stops on the City’s self-guided Sculpture Tour. Next time you're exploring town, see if you can find both — and decide which one deserves the best view.

The annual hanging baskets and potted flowers have arrived in Black Hawk! Below is a sneak peek

Each year, these beautiful blooms help bring extra color and charm to the City, and you’ll spot them throughout Black Hawk, including on the Gregory Street Plaza.

And if you hang out long enough, you may even see a few hummingbirds helping themselves to a quick snack from the flowers. They know a good stop when they find one.

Where else can you find them in the City? You'll have to visit and see for yourself!

This historic photo of the Black Hawk High School graduating class [circa early 1900s] shows just six graduates sitting for a portrait. More than a century later, the Gilpin High School Class of 2026 includes 28 graduates — each proudly awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the City of Black Hawk.

From six students to 28 scholarship recipients, it’s a powerful reminder of how far our community has come and the bright future ahead for the next generation. Congratulations, graduates!

As we approach 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed by our forefathers, we are celebrating here in Black Hawk. From historic tea-stained bunting to the newly unfurled “Liberty Street” banner over Gregory Street, the City is commemorating America’s 250th anniversary and Colorado’s 150th anniversary in a big way this summer.

The celebration all leads up to our annual Founders’ Day festival on June 27. We hope to see you there!
