Property taxes can be confusing, and a big part of this job is helping people understand how the pieces fit together.

As County Assessor, my office discovers, lists, classifies and values property according to Colorado law. That value is one part of the property tax calculation, along with assessment rates, exemptions or reductions, and the mill levies set by taxing authorities.

When someone calls and asks, “Why are my taxes this amount?” the answer is often more than just the value.

That’s why we spend a lot of time walking people through it. If you have a question about your value or how your taxes were calculated, call us. We’re happy to help you figure it out.

Election Day is getting closer, and over the next 11 weeks I’d like to spend a little time sharing more about the work of the Gilpin County Assessor’s Office, what I’ve learned during my first term, and the experience and qualifications I bring to the job.

Property assessment can be complicated — especially after several years of legislative changes in Colorado — and one of my priorities has been making the process easier to understand and making sure property owners know they can reach out and ask questions.

So between now and Election Day, I’ll be sharing a little more each week about the office, the work we’ve accomplished, what the Assessor actually does, and what lies ahead.

I’ll be posting most of these weekly updates on my April Nielsen for Gilpin County Assessor page rather than filling up the community page every Tuesday. 😊 If you’re interested in following along, come over and check out the page.
