Look at the left photo first!
Can you find the rattlesnake ??While at the southern end of the High Desert Trail, in the parking lot of the Black Canyon National Trailhead off Warner Road here in Black Canyon City, I was getting ready to pick up a piece of trash and luckily noticed this guy before he noticed me. Just a reminder that I always need to look before I step or reach for anything on the ground here in the Sonoran Desert. I’ve made him easy to find by enlarging him in the photo at right. Be safe and careful out there! Enjoy the great outdoors! 🌵🐍🦂🌵

On my way to High Desert Park this morning look at the wild burro’s that were just grazing behind the BCC Health Clinic. A bit skiddish they were so drivers please be careful and drive safely. Just another day in wild Arizona! 🌵

These 6 wild burros were surprisingly found on the corner of Mesquite Dr. and S. Desert Cove in Black Canyon City. They are munching on the great protein source from the mesquite tree seeds. If you look close you can see their coats are shiny so they appear to be healthy. Usually this is where cows like to hang out. Please be safe as you drive around town!

Wild burro’s just off the trail by the Gambel Quail bench! The trail is a little mushy in spots after the recent rain, but nothing a visit to the great outdoors won’t cure! Enjoy!

We are sorry to inform our community that until further notice the 6 barbecue grills at High Desert Park are closed due to fire restrictions within our state. Our first 100 degree weather occurred earlier this week and the summer heat is expected to continue for several months. Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. Please report any open flame 🔥 or smoke 💨 to the 911 call center. Have a SAFE summer!

The trees that Yavapai County just planted are being eaten and destroyed by cows coming into the park from Ellen Dr., the street west of the park. That entrance/exit has NO CATTLEGUARD! Why? The county installed cattle guards on Jaci Lane and on Westridge Lane, the two other roads into the park. We were told that the 5or 6 homeowners on Ellen Dr. and April Dr. did not want a cattle guard on that road and elected to install a remote control gate instead. No gate has been installed as yet. Does anyone know if this gate option information is correct or why the county chose not to install a cattle guard on that part of the park?

These are photos of the beautiful male Vermilion Flycatcher at our very own High Desert Park (HDP). Bird watchers from all over the southwest come to Black Canyon City to see this little fella. He usually hangs out at the pond in Heritage Park near our visitor center but has recently been spotted at HDP as well. The new irrigation system for the recent addition of 17 new trees is probably providing a steady supply of water and bugs for them. Neighbors of the park on the north side might also be providing attractions as well. Enjoy them and the great outdoors at HDP!🌵

The clubhouse at High Desert Park now has brand new air conditioning system! Yes, the great folks at Yavapai County park and recreation and the facilities branch were kind enough to install air conditioning in our community building. No more evaporative coolers on the roof. AND… the gas heater was also replaced by this system as well. No more ugly heater hanging down from the ceiling to hit your head on. So if you have an event and need a COOL place in the summer and a warm place in the winter to host it give us a call. Enjoy the great outdoors and cool indoors at High Desert Park clubhouse!

High Desert Trail sign has been newly painted. Notice anything different? Yes, the trail letters are now painted a forest green color instead of white. We’ve been told it stands out more and is easier to read! 😳😱
And the pavilion outside panels were also painted a bright yellow 😎 so if you’re hiking and get disoriented just look for them to get back home. Enjoy the great outdoors at High Desert Park.🌵

On behalf of the High Desert Helpers we would like to wish all mothers of our community a blessed and peaceful Mother’s Day for 2025. This past week on Thursday and in cooperation with our local Canon Elementary School, we sent a flower home with each child to give to their mother. Your dedicated service and devotion to our children inspires us all to love and cherish each other. Thank you and may God bless y’all.🙏🏼

The staghorn cholla are blooming in the park now. Their yellow flowers won’t last long. The staghorn around the Rock Springs Overlook seem to be in the best shape. Come enjoy them and the cool refreshing breeze at High Desert Park

Carl and Ana Childers have recently adopted two trees as a show of support for our High Desert Park. The trees are labeed in honor of their two daughters, Mani and Freya. They were able to visit the park together as a family and place signs on their respective trees. The Childers have been frequent park patrons as hikers over the years, but now they are also able to enjoy the playground with their little girls. Our thanks goes out to this wonderful family! 🙏🏼
