🌲 A Friendly Wildlife Reminder for Black Butte Ranch 🐾

One of the things that makes Black Butte Ranch so special is that we’re surrounded by a beautiful, natural forest—and that means we share this incredible landscape with wildlife, including predatory animals.

Seeing wildlife is not uncommon, and while these encounters can be amazing, it’s important to give animals plenty of space and take a few simple precautions:

🚶‍♀️ Avoid walking alone at night, especially in less-traveled areas.
🐕 Keep pets close and within view at all times.
🌲 Never approach, follow, or attempt to interact with wildlife.
👀 Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings, particularly around dawn, dusk, and after dark.

Let’s enjoy the beauty of Black Butte Ranch while respecting the wild neighbors who call this place home. A little awareness goes a long way in keeping people, pets, and wildlife safe.

Black Butte Ranch, Oregon — From August 19 through September 7, 2026, the Black Butte Ranch Police Department, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is joining law enforcement agencies nationwide in a heightened effort to prevent impaired driving and save lives during the Labor Day holiday. The message is clear: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

During the 2024 Labor Day holiday (6 p.m. August 30 - 5:59 a.m. September 3), there were 505 traffic crash fatalities nationwide. Of these 505 fatalities, 34% (170) involved a drunk driver. Seventy-seven percent of the impaired drivers killed had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or higher. Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who were killed in crashes over the Labor Day holiday in 2024, 40% of those drivers were drunk, with BACs of .08 or higher.

“The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is an awareness effort to get the message out that drunk driving is illegal and it kills. Let’s make this a partnership between law enforcement and drivers: Help us protect the community and put an end to this dangerous behavior.

If a driver intends to drink during a Labor Day festivity, he or she should plan ahead for a safe ride home by securing a designated driver or calling a taxi or rideshare. They shouldn’t wait until after drinking to plan how to get somewhere. Impairment clouds a person’s judgment and endangers others on the road.

If a driver finds they are unable to drive, they should give their keys to a sober driver so that person can get them home safely. When a friend has been drinking and is considering driving, friends should be proactive — take away the keys and help them get a sober ride home. If anyone spots a drunk driver, contact local law enforcement.

Black Butte Ranch, Oregon — The Black Butte Ranch Police Department continues its commitment to keeping local roadways safe through increased traffic enforcement efforts conducted last month. Officers have focused on identifying traffic violations and addressing behaviors that contribute to crashes and injuries.

These enforcement activities are part of an ongoing public safety campaign designed to raise awareness about the importance of traffic safety.

Working in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Black Butte Ranch Police Department encourages all drivers to make safety their top priority every time they travel.

Additionally, last month the Central Oregon Multi-Agency Traffic Team conducted a three-day speed enforcement campaign focused on reducing dangerous speeding and promoting safer roadways throughout our communities.

During the campaign, the team made 107 traffic stops, including 74 for speeding. The Oregon State Police High Visibility Enforcement Unit also joined the effort across the tri-county area, making an additional 437 traffic stops, with 208 involving speeding.

Speed is a major contributing factor in serious injury and fatal crashes. When you speed, you have less time to react, and the consequences of a crash can be devastating.

Our goal isn't simply to write citations — it's to prevent crashes, protect lives, and help everyone get home safely.

Slow down. Buckle up. Stay alert. Arrive alive.

Black Butte Ranch Police Department Provides Akawa Butte Fire Update

Black Butte Ranch, Oregon — The Black Butte Ranch Police Department continues to work closely with fire officials, emergency management partners, and public safety agencies as suppression efforts continue on the Akawa Butte Fire.
Overnight rainfall and increased humidity significantly moderated fire behavior, allowing firefighting crews to make meaningful progress. According to fire officials, night operations focused on constructing direct control lines wherever conditions allowed while structural protection teams removed remaining combustible debris around homes and reinforced defensible space in preparation for the anticipated return of hot, dry, and windy weather. Firefighters also installed hose lines in the southern portion of the fire near Indian Ford Road and Wilt Road and continued work along Forest Service Road 11 to establish contingency fire lines.
Today's operational priorities include establishing a continuous control line around the fire perimeter, strengthening existing structure protection measures, and preparing additional contingency lines. Crews will focus on securing control lines south of SW Jordan Road ahead of a forecasted wind shift from the north-northeast to the west-northwest. Improved visibility is expected to allow increased use of aerial firefighting resources, particularly in the southern portion of the fire north of Sisters.

Road Closures and Power Outages
Motorists are reminded that multiple road closures remain in effect, including:
• Middle View Road
• Indian Ford Road
• The section between Green Ridge Road and Meadow View Road
In addition, Central Electric Cooperative has de-energized power to homes on Stevens Canyon Road to Pine Glen Road and areas north of Indian Ford Road to support firefighter safety and operations.

Weather Conditions
While overnight relative humidity reached 100 percent, conditions are expected to rapidly dry today. Forecasts call for temperatures in the low 90s, relative humidity dropping to approximately 30 percent by midday, and sustained winds continuing into the weekend. These conditions may increase fire activity.

Community Meeting
An in-person community meeting will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at the Sisters High School Auditorium. The meeting will also be livestreamed on the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District page for those unable to attend in person.

Central Oregon MATT and Oregon State Police Launch Countywide Traffic Safety Operation

Black Butte Ranch, Oregon —The Central Oregon Multi-Agency Traffic Team (MATT), alongside the Oregon State Police High-Visibility Enforcement Unit, will conduct a coordinated traffic safety operation throughout Deschutes County from July 16 through July 18. The three-day effort will focus on speed-related violations and DUII deterrence, detection, and arrests.

All six member agencies of the Central Oregon MATT—Bend Police Department, Black Butte Ranch Police Department, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Redmond Police Department, Sunriver Police Department, and Oregon State Police–Bend Command—will be focusing on different regions of the county each day:

• July 16: South County
• July 17: Central and East County
• July 18: North and West County

Additional officers, deputies, and troopers will be on roadways across Deschutes County looking for traffic violations and traffic crimes commonly associated with fatal and serious-injury crashes. These focus areas are summarized in the SOLID acronym: Speed, Occupant protection, Lane departure, Impairment, and Distracted driving.

Black Butte Ranch, Oregon — The Black Butte Ranch Police Department is partnering with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during the nationwide Speeding Slows You Down high-visibility enforcement campaign to remind motorists that speeding is not only against the law—it puts lives at risk.

Throughout the campaign, residents and visitors can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on roadways throughout/surrounding Black Butte Ranch. Officers will focus on identifying and stopping speeding violations in an effort to improve traffic safety and reduce the risk of serious crashes.
Speed remains one of the leading contributing factors in fatal traffic crashes across the United States. In 2024, 11,288 people lost their lives in speed-related crashes, accounting for 29% of all traffic fatalities nationwide. Young drivers continue to be disproportionately represented in these crashes. Among drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2024, 39% of males and 20% of females between the ages of 15 and 20 were speeding.

The consequences of speeding extend far beyond receiving a citation. Excessive speed reduces a driver’s ability to react to changing road conditions, increases stopping distance, and significantly raises the likelihood of severe injury or death in the event of a crash.

The Black Butte Ranch Police Department encourages all motorists to:
• Obey posted speed limits.
• Slow down in neighborhoods, school zones, & areas with pedestrian traffic.
• Allow extra travel time instead of rushing.
• Drive responsibly and remain attentive to changing road and weather conditions.

By slowing down and driving responsibly, every motorist can help make Black Butte Ranch’s roadways safer for residents, visitors, cyclists, and pedestrians.
