North Dakota State Patrol and law enforcement partners will assist with processions honoring Staff Sergeant Irvin Ellingson tomorrow between Fargo and Grand Forks. Temporary traffic delays are possible in these cities and along portions of I-29.

June 18 and 20, the North Dakota State Patrol and many law enforcement partners will assist with processions honoring Staff Sergeant Irvin Ellingson, a North Dakota airman and World War II prisoner of war whose remains were identified in 2025, more than 80 years after his death.

Staff Sergeant Ellingson was aboard a B-29 Superfortress when it was shot down over Japan in 1945. He survived the crash, was taken prisoner, and died later that year while in captivity. Thanks to the efforts of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, he is finally coming home.

On Thursday, June 18, a procession will depart the Fargo Air Museum at 2 p.m. and travel north on Interstate 29 to Grand Forks. Additional escorts will occur in Grand Forks following a 4 p.m. Celebration of Life at Veterans Memorial Park.

On Saturday, June 20, a funeral procession will depart Grand Forks at 9 a.m. and travel to Dahlen.

Motorists should expect temporary traffic delays in the Fargo and Grand Forks areas and along portions of I-29. We thank the public for their patience as Staff Sergeant Ellingson is escorted home with the dignity and honor he earned through his service and sacrifice.

Welcome home, Staff Sergeant Ellingson.

Meet Poppy Mills, NDDOT's photographer. She's been with NDDOT since 2010. In her time off work, she enjoys being a "Mom Taxi," attending her three kids' activities, reading books and kayaking.

"I enjoy working at the NDDOT because I get to collaborate with team members across the entire state to help tell our story. From engineering and construction to administration and maintenance, every discipline plays a vital role in serving North Dakotans. It’s inspiring to highlight the amazing people who work every day to make transportation safer and more convenient for the citizens of North Dakota."

In North Dakota, it's the law. Move over if you see any of these vehicles on the side of the road:

Emergency vehicles (police, fire, ambulance); NDDOT vehicles; tow trucks; all other vehicles with flashing hazard lights (e.g., a car with a flat tire).

It prevents crashes and saves lives. Thanks for listening to our TED Talk, and drive safely!
