Today, September 15, is Children of Incarcerated Parents Day.

Governor Kelly Armstrong has proclaimed today Children of Incarcerated Parents Day in North Dakota, recognizing the challenges children face when a parent is incarcerated and the importance of maintaining family connections.

Family matters. Supporting children and helping families stay connected is an important part of building healthy, productive neighbors and a safe North Dakota.

We recently wrapped up our community forum in Devils Lake, where we had the opportunity to connect with local stakeholders and discuss the work of the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

These conversations are an important part of building relationships, sharing information and working together to support our communities.

A special thank you to the Devils Lake Public Library for hosting us and providing a great space for the conversation. We appreciate everyone who took the time to join us and share their perspective.

Returning to the community comes with many barriers, including finding employment and housing, securing transportation, accessing healthcare, addressing substance use, and building a positive support system.

On August 27, NDSP hosted a Community Resource Fair to help residents begin making connections with resources and people who can support them as they prepare for release.

Thirty-four community organizations participated, and 98 residents attended.

While one event cannot solve every challenge, we believe successful reentry begins before the day someone walks out the door. Our goal is simple: provide hope and help people build connections before release that can support them after release.

Thank you to every organization and community member who invested their time, encouragement, and support. The feedback from residents makes it clear that your presence made a difference.

The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation proudly recognizes the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center for earning its Substance Abuse Treatment Program License—an outstanding achievement that reflects months of planning, collaboration, and dedicated work. Lake Region continues to demonstrate innovation and strong community leadership. In addition to housing individuals through the DOCR overflow program, the facility had also partnered with local treatment providers, and now with a becoming a licensed substance use treatment program they can continue to expand access to meaningful programming and support services for those in its custody and care.

Becoming a licensed substance use treatment program is a significant accomplishment. It strengthens rehabilitation and recovery opportunities, supports successful reintegration, and contributes to improved public safety and healthier communities. Congratulations to Director Starr Klemetsrud, Victoria Church, LAC, LAPC and the Lake Region staff, and everyone who contributed to this important milestone. Your commitment, professionalism, and willingness to develop innovative solutions are making a meaningful difference across North Dakota.

We invite you to our Father’s Fall Family Event- an event dedicated to celebrating fatherhood, strengthening family connections, and creating joyful fall memories together. We truly look forward to a wonderful evening with our MRCC families!

Dinner will be served, so please let staff know of any dietary restrictions ahead of time.

All visitors must be approved visitors and immediate family members.

We’re excited to share information about The Missing Peace Collective, a new nonprofit organization partnering with the James River Correctional Center (JRCC) to help families maintain meaningful connections with their loved ones.

The Missing Peace Collective provides free transportation for families of JRCC residents to visit their loved ones. At this time, transportation is available quarterly for families living in Minnesota.

The first trip is planned for the weekend of November 13.

For families who may not be able to make the trip to JRCC on their own, this is a great opportunity to remove some of those barriers and make visiting a little more accessible.

If a JRCC resident has family in Minnesota who may benefit from this opportunity, please share the information in the attached flyer with them so they can coordinate transportation and other trip details directly with The Missing Peace Collective.

This morning, a staff and residents softball game was scheduled at NDSP but was unfortunately canceled due to the weather.

As part of the day’s event, staff and residents had the opportunity to purchase and enjoy ice cream from FOMO 10/40 Creamery & Coffee during the game. Despite the weather interruption and cancellation, Andrew and Josh still came out to serve everyone who had placed an order.

Thank you, Andrew, and Josh, for your continued support of NDSP and for helping make the day enjoyable despite the unexpected weather!
