At last week’s North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) IT & Cybersecurity Conference, our very own John Rodenbiker, Director of Cyber Operations, delivered a stellar update on what the Security team is seeing and doing across the state’s cyber landscape.

John walked attendees through the day-to-day reality inside NDIT’s cyber operations—highlighting active threat monitoring, real-world incidents being tracked and mitigated, and the continuous work required to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated adversaries. His remarks underscored just how quickly the threat environment is evolving and why strong, adaptive defenses remain essential to protecting critical government services and infrastructure.

It was a clear, candid, and highly relevant look at the work going into state cybersecurity operations—connecting strategy directly to on-the-ground realities. John brought practical context that strongly resonated with the cooperative-minded audience.

Happy World Password Day! It’s the purr-fect time to give your accounts a quick security checkup. 🔐

Your passwords protect everything—email, banking, work systems—and they’re worth making strong. So if you’re still using something as easy to crack as “MrWhiskers2026,” it might be time for an upgrade.

A few best practices for stronger passwords:
✅ Use at least 15 characters.
✅ Combine uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.
✅ Avoid personal info or common patterns.
✅ Use a unique passphrase for each account.

Pro Tip: Make it easier to remember by incorporating a sentence into a password. For example:
“My very lazy cat naps in sunny windows every day” → Mvlcniswed1988!

Small updates, BIG difference.

Stay aware. Stay safe. And as always— .

S – Set strong, unique passwords.
M – Make multifactor authentication a habit.
A – Avoid risky links, attachments, and senders.
R – Regularly do software and device updates.
T – Take care with personal info.

The NDIT Cybersecurity Roadshow kicked off its annual workshop with a stop in Bismarck, where teams from across the state came together for hands-on training in real-world incident response.

You could see the collaboration right away. Teams were working through scenarios together, testing their incident response plans, and talking through challenges like ransomware and crisis communications, all with a shared focus on strengthening cybersecurity for our political subdivisions and K–12 schools.

This work is about more than training. It’s about being ready together. It’s also a reminder that when it comes to cybersecurity, preparation isn’t optional. It’s essential.

We’re looking forward to bringing the roadshow to Fargo this fall!

Once a month, our NDIT team comes together for our “Fireside Chat”—a chance to connect, catch up, and recharge (complete with a cozy, digital fireplace).

We love this tradition, and yesterday’s gathering was a great reminder of why it matters. Whether team members joined in Bismarck or remotely, we came together ready to share, learn, and celebrate the innovative IT work happening across North Dakota.

We heard inspiring stories of collaboration, shared updates from across agencies, and recognized the people making it all happen. The coffee was flowing, the conversation was easy, and the “fireside” vibe was alive and well.

These chats are more than updates—they’re a chance to step away from the day-to-day, connect across teams, and celebrate the impact we’re making together.

Our state is officially the first non-federal entity in the country to access unfiltered FAA radar data for advanced drone operations.

“What does that mean for North Dakotans?” you might ask. For starters:
