Thanks to our supporters, The Salvation Army Northern Division is able to help people in Minnesota and North Dakota who face challenges large and small … even as small as securing a birthday cake.

Such was the case when a single mother came to one of our food shelves. She appeared to be very sad, and when our food shelf worker asked her why, the mother explained that she couldn’t afford to buy a cake for her daughter’s birthday today.

After hearing this news, the worker headed to a back room and dug through a pallet of donations received that morning from a local grocery store. The worker then discovered a big, beautiful birthday cake with the theme, “Happy Birthday, Princess!”

The worker gave the cake to the mother and she was overwhelmed with joy and happiness. She couldn’t wait to go home and celebrate with her daughter.

Happy National Donut Day! Today, we had the incredible privilege of dropping off fresh donuts to our brave local firefighters, police officers, and first responders across Bismarck and Mandan.
It’s always an honor to support the men and women who keep our communities safe every single day. But did you know this sweet tradition actually goes back over a century?

The History Behind the Pastry 🍩
National Donut Day was actually started by The Salvation Army in Chicago back in 1938. It was created to honor our "Donut Lassies"—the brave women who traveled to the front lines of World War I in 1917 to support American soldiers.
Stationed right near the combat zones in France, these volunteers wanted to give the troops a comforting taste of home. Armed with limited rations, they got creative and used continuous-service helmets to fry up fresh, warm donuts for the homesick soldiers. The simple treat became a massive symbol of hope and comfort amid the hardships of war.

Today, we are proud to carry on that exact same legacy of service, comfort, and deep gratitude right here at home.

To our Bismarck and Mandan first responders: thank you for your dedication, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to protecting our families. We are so incredibly grateful for you today and every day!

Officially launching the strategy, General Lyndon Buckingham celebrated its alignment with the values of The Salvation Army and reminded staff that the strategy is ultimately about advancing God’s mission.

Drawing on the biblical account of Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, the General highlighted the power of teamwork and shared responsibility.

‘A big task becomes much more manageable when it is divided into smaller parts and when many people get involved,’ he said. ‘When people work together efficiently and faithfully, they can achieve extraordinary results. We can too.’
