2026 is the International Year of the Woman Farmer! We promised some great stories of women farmers in North Dakota and here is another awesome profile! Sabrina Renner and her husband built a livestock business that required learning animal husbandry, public engagement, regulatory compliance, and agricultural entrepreneurship from the ground up. What do adult emerald ash borers look like? They are bullet-shaped with metallic emerald green wing coverings. They are very small - only 0.3 - 0.53 inches long (about 1 cm). They leave D-shaped exit holes 1/8 inch in diameter when they emerge. Keep an eye out for these invasive pests and report any suspect trees at www.ndda.nd.gov/reab

What is that purple thing in the tree? It's not a pinata; these are emerald ash borer traps and we place them in cities, state parks, recreation areas, campgrounds, rest stops and other areas to survey for emerald ash borer. If you see one, please leave it undisturbed.

To help protect against EAB and all pests, it's important to diversify tree plantings. Green ash is the most plentiful tree in the state, but as they die or are removed, they should be replaced by a different species rather than another single species.

Check out the North Dakota tree selector at https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/tree-selector or visit with your local nursery for options.

2026 is the International Year of the Woman Farmer! We promised some great stories of women farmers in North Dakota and here is another awesome profile! Located in central North Dakota, Guardian Grains is a fourth-generation family farm owned and operated by DeAnna and Kelly Lozensky. Now farming 2,200 acres of small grains, the Lozenskys proudly take a regenerative, soil-first approach. When the Lozenskys began milling the flour and eating what they grew, DeAnna says it inspired them to change the way they approached farming, creating the shift to regenerative practices. Livestock producers are reminded that vaccines are available to protect their animals from anthrax, which is especially important in areas with a history of the disease. Producers in other areas of the state should consult their local veterinarian to review their risk factors and determine their vaccination needs. Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week is May 17-23 https://www.ndda.nd.gov/news/emerald-ash-borer-awareness-week-may-17-23

The emerald ash borer (EAB) attacks true ash trees, killing them within several years. EAB has been found in LaMoure and Cass counties and is also found in 37 additional states and 6 Canadian provinces, including our neighbors, Minnesota, South Dakota and Manitoba.

EAB spreads slowly on its own but can be moved long distances in firewood and ash nursery stock. To help prevent the spread, please buy your firewood from local sources or use certified heat-treated firewood.
