The Owens Valley is an arid valley in the Eastern Sierra of southeastern California in the United States. The Owens River flows through the 75-mile long valley bounded by the Inyo Mountains on the east, the Coso Range on the southeast, and the Sierra Nevada Range on the west. Mount Whitney rises majestically over 14,000 feet with the floor of the Owens Valley resting at 4,000 feet in elevation mak

ing the the valley one of the deepest valleys in the United States. The bed of Owens Lake, now a dry alkali flat, sits on the southern end of the valley. One-third of the water used by the City of Los Angeles comes from the Owens Valley through the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The Owens Valley Indian Water Commission is committed to protecting the waters of the Owens Valley and works with the support of the three member tribes to carry out the mission of protecting the precious water that sustains all life.

What has water taught you lately?

This was the question we carried throughout a beautiful weekend with some of the incredible women of at Three Creeks.

Alex guided us as we explored water as a relative, a teacher, and a carrier of memory. We shared stories of our first memories of water, reflected on the waters that shaped us, wrote poetry, created art, sat in silence, and dreamed together about the future we hope to create.

Water reminded us that movement is healthy. That what stays stagnant too long begins to suffer. That transformation is possible. That we can move around obstacles without losing ourselves. And that even as water changes form, it remains water.

We were also honored to support LA Walks in recording conversations for their podcast, helping share stories about water, stewardship, advocacy, and the deep connections between Payahuunadü and Los Angeles.

We left feeling more connected and committed, to each other, to our communities, and to the waters that make all life possible.

Thank you, LA Walks, for making the journey upstream and for the work you do to connect people to place, story, and one another. We’re grateful for the friendships, conversations, and collaborations that emerged from this exchange, and excited to continue building relationships between Los Angeles and the source of nearly half of its water.

We're looking for local Indigenous stewards to join us in caring for Three Creeks this summer and fall.

Stewardship takes many forms: tending the pond and waterways, caring for gardens and fruit trees, supporting community events, welcoming guests, sharing stories through social media and film, and helping care for this special community space.

If you're looking to deepen your relationship with the land, learn new skills, meet great people, and be part of a growing community of care, we'd love to hear from you.

Please see the flyer for dates and details, or reach out to us directly at 323-523-3039.
