Our Story
The Rotary Club of Bishop has, just in the last sixteen years, raised in excess of $250,000 for various scholarships and community projects. In addition, the Club raised some $55,000 to successfully help eradicate poliomyelitis on a world-wide basis through Rotary International. These figures only encompass monetary contributions. Rotarians are also known for giving generous "in-kind" donations of their time, energy, and expertise. When overall labor costs and "leverage" value are considered, approximately ten times the above cash amounts have been provided in value to the community through the service ideals followed by Bishop Rotarians. We serve the Community with the following Service Projects: Annual Easter Bags and Baskets Workshop to create 350 Easter baskets for seniors in our community. Prepares "Special" school boxes for the students and teachers at Elm and Pine Elementary schools. Approximately 800 students and 42 teachers benefit from the annual Rotary project. Sponsors Bishop Interact Club at Bishop Union High School and supports many of their projects. Help finance a weekend for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Club members volunteer their time at the "Join us for Lunch" program, a ministry of the Bishop First United Methodist Church, each Wednesday of the month. Club members generously took sixty (60) "Make a Wish" ornaments representing sixty (60) children in Inyo County Bishop, Chalfant, and Benton. This annual event ensures that these children experience a truly magical Christmas as their wishes are realized with special treasures. Members participate in "Reaching Out Programs" and assist in the local juvenile justice system. Rotarians visit the local juvenile detention facility in Independence where they can share their life experiences and talk about opportunities available for future education and work. Give Annual Scholarships to Academic and Vocational students at Bishop Union High School. Give generous donations to foster care children in and from Bishop.
