🚨⛈️ WEATHER & TRAVEL ADVISORY ⛈️🚨

The Bishop area is currently experiencing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and possible localized flooding conditions. A Flood Watch remains in effect, and additional rainfall is expected throughout the day. Residents traveling to the Bishop CISD Graduation at Texas A&M University–Kingsville are encouraged to use extra caution and plan accordingly.

🎓 GRADUATION is a special moment for our students and families, and we want everyone to arrive safely.

⚠️ Please keep the following in mind before heading to Kingsville:

• Leave earlier than normal to allow extra travel time due to rain and reduced visibility
• Slow down and increase following distance while driving
• Turn your headlights on during rainfall
• Avoid flooded roadways “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”
• Keep an eye on weather updates before departing
• Have umbrellas, rain jackets, and appropriate footwear ready
• Charge your phone beforehand in case of weather-related delays or emergencies

Heavy rain can quickly create dangerous driving conditions on highways and rural roads between Bishop and Kingsville. Even if the rain lightens up temporarily, roads may still be slick or have standing water.

👮‍♀️👮‍♂️ Rain or shine, the Bishop Police Department will be out and about to help ensure traffic safety and assist our community during tonight’s graduation events. We ask everyone to remain patient, cautious, and focused on getting there safely!

Most importantly…CONGRATULATIONS to the BCISD Class of 2026! 🎓💚💛

Stay safe, travel smart, and enjoy this unforgettable milestone with your families. ❤️

Bishop Police Department’s annual ceremony is dedicated to the memory of Bishop Police Department Officer Pedro Vela.

Today, and every day, the Bishop Police Department honors the memory of one of our own:
Police Officer Pedro Vela Jr.

In May 2018, Officer Pedro Vela's life was tragically taken when he was struck in a hit and run while riding his motorcycle on the way to see family and friends. Though the suspect fled, the loss left behind has never faded and never will.

Pedro was more than an officer. He was a son, a brother, a friend, and a guardian of the Bishop community. His laugnter, loyalty, and dedication still echo within our department and in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy continues in every badge worn, every call answered, and every life protected in his name.

To his family and loved ones, please know that we carry Pedro's memory not just in tribute, but with deep love and lasting respect.

Rest In Peace Officer Vela! You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten!

National Police Week is observed each year to honor and remember the brave law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, while also recognizing the men and women who continue to serve and protect communities across our nation every day.

Established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, National Police Week includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th and serves as a time of remembrance, gratitude, and recognition for the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their families.

Throughout the week, memorial services, candlelight vigils, and ceremonies are held across the country, especially in Washington, D.C., to honor those who gave their lives in service to others.

The Bishop Police Department is proud of its officers and staff for their dedication, professionalism, and continued commitment to serving the community each and every day. Their willingness to answer the call, protect others, and serve with honor does not go unnoticed! 💙🇺🇸

The Bishop Police Department proudly congratulates K9 Handler Carolina Rosales and K9 Aida on successfully completing a 3 week Certified Detection K9 Handler Course.

This was not a basic class, it was an intensive, multi-week training program designed to build high-functioning K9 teams through hands-on instruction, real-world scenarios, and practical application. The training focused on detection work in controlled and unpredictable environments, requiring both handler and K9 to perform under pressure, problem-solve, and operate with precision.

Throughout the course, Officer Rosales and K9 Aida trained in areas such as:
• Odor detection and recognition
• Search techniques in vehicles, buildings, and open areas
• Proper handling, communication, and control
• Reading behavioral changes and alert responses
• Building consistency, accuracy, and reliability in finds

In addition to the technical aspects, one of the most critical components of K9 school is the bond between handler and dog. This relationship is built through repetition, trust, and discipline and it is what ultimately determines the success of the team in the field.

Officer Rosales demonstrated strong commitment, professionalism, and resilience throughout the entire three weeks. K9 Aida proved to be focused, driven, and highly capable, consistently performing at a level that reflects her strong foundation and continued development.

We have full confidence in Officer Rosales and K9 Aida. They are a strong, reliable team that will play a vital role in proactive policing and keeping our community safe.

We also extend our appreciation to Covenant K9 for providing a high-quality training program that emphasizes both theory and real-world application, ensuring each K9 team leaves prepared and mission-ready.

Please join us in congratulating K9 Handler Rosales and K9 Aida on this accomplishment.

This is just the beginning.

Today, we had the opportunity to sit down and learn from one of our own.

Our Texas A&M University–Kingsville (TAMUK) intern “Juan”, a Political Science major with aspirations of becoming a prosecutor, delivered a detailed presentation to our team based on his first-hand observations with our department.

Over the past four months, he rode alongside our patrol officers, quietly observing day-to-day operations. As part of his criminal justice coursework under Dr. Plank, he was required to conduct a presentation analyzing real-world policing practices.

To ensure authenticity, his observations were conducted in a way that did not influence officer behavior, allowing him to capture a true picture of how our officers operate in the field.

His presentation focused on key aspects of modern policing, including:
- Informal surveillance
- Community engagement
- High-visibility patrol
- Business checks
- Traffic stops

We’re proud to support future leaders in the criminal justice field, and even more proud to see the level of professionalism, attention to detail, and passion Juan demonstrated today.

The future of the justice system is in good hands. Juan, we’re rooting for you loud and proud!

At approximately 5:56 a.m., Bishop Police Department night shift officers responded to a reported family violence incident in the 200 block of E. Joyce Street within the City of Bishop.

Following an on-scene investigation, Reynaldo H. Salazar Jr., age 34, was arrested and charged with the following offenses:
