📰NEWS RELEASE

WEST NILE VIRUS UPDATE FROM COCHISE COUNTY FOR SIERRA VISTA AND SURROUNDING AREAS

BISBEE, Ariz. (10/06/2026)

Cochise County Health and Social Services is providing an update on West Nile Virus (WNV) activity in Cochise County. Four (4) confirmed human cases and three (3) probable human cases have now been identified in Cochise County, an increase since the last report on September 10, 2026.

WNV is a mosquito-borne disease that can be transmitted to humans and equines through the bite of an infected female Culex mosquito. Residents are encouraged to take precautions to reduce their risk of mosquito bites and help prevent the spread of WNV.

The following measures are recommended to be adopted countywide:

SYMPTOM ONSET USUALLY TAKES FROM 2-6 DAYS AFTER INFECTION | PREVENTION IS KEY | PROTECT YOURSELF BY:
▪️ Using EPA-approved mosquito repellent.
▪️ Wear loose-fitting clothing, long sleeved shirts and pants.
▪️ Emptying containers that have standing water, like tires, pots, water bowls, etc.
▪️ Maintaining yards and properly treating swimming pools.

▪️ Common symptoms of WNV infection include headache, weakness, muscle and joint pain, and gastrointestinal symptoms and rash. Severe symptoms include paralysis, coma, and even death.
▪️ Groups at higher risk include children, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals with chronic conditions.

Cochise County Health and Social Services is actively addressing the situation with care and diligence. We want to assure our community that your well-being is our top priority, and we will continue to provide timely updates as we move forward.

If you see a bat in your dog or cat’s mouth, do not try to remove it yourself. Avoid touching the bat and follow the safety precautions below to help protect yourself and your pet from potential rabies exposure.

🐕 This is especially important for hunting dogs that may come into contact with bats or other wildlife while outdoors.
