Congratulations to the very first U.S. Coast Guard graduates of the TRACEN training center, located at the former site of Birmingham-Southern College. Mayor Randall Woodfin was joined by Rep. Terri Sewell and Coast Guard leadership for the historic event. The Order in the Court event last week brought together legal professionals, judges, court clerks, and community resource providers to share ideas, network, and strengthen the administration of justice. The two-day conference at Boutwell Auditorium concluded with an uplifting message from Stellar Award winner and Rock City Pastor Mike Jr., who emphasized collaboration among the church, community, and legal system to better serve communities.

City of Birmingham offices, with the exception of police, fire, and 911, will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.

Household garbage and recycling pickup schedules will be pushed back one day for all routes. That means those with a Monday trash pick-up day will have theirs collected on Tuesday. Those with a Tuesday pick-up day will have theirs collected on Wednesday. And so on.

After Friday, Sept. 11, the regular trash schedule will resume.

This morning, residents and city officials welcomed the new Carver Jones Market to the Heritage Park Towne Centre, in the former Save a Lot location. The area has been labeled as one of many food deserts in our city, and this location will help bring fresh food and produce options to the neighborhood. "Every neighborhood deserves the opportunity to live and eat well," Mayor Woodfin said. "Today is a huge step in making healthy foods accessible to all."
