Honoring Our Journey, Strengthening Our Community

This Saturday, we shared a very special day during our CALA Volunteer Retreat.

It was a time to reconnect, reflect on our journey, share our stories, open our hearts, and celebrate the commitment of our volunteers to our community.

We also had the honor of recognizing Hector Lopez as our Volunteer of the Year! 🏆 Thank you, Hector, for your dedication, generosity, and commitment to our community!

We also celebrated the cultural diversity that represents our community through food. A very special thank you to Mi Tierra Linda Supermarketa Linda for sponsoring our delicious lunch, featuring Guatemalan-style chicken 🇬🇹 and Mexican-style pork ribs 🇲🇽.

✨ Our HIV Testing Training Workshop was a great success!✨

This past Saturday, August 8, we had a wonderful day filled with learning, preparation, and commitment to the health of our community. Participants had the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and gain valuable tools to continue promoting HIV prevention, education, and testing.

A special thank you to The 1917 Clinic at UAB for their collaboration, support, and for sharing their knowledge and expertise with our participants.

We also want to thank Mi Tierra Linda Supermarket for sponsoring our delicious breakfast and for their continued support of our community.

And there’s more to come! We’ll soon have Part Two of this training as we continue learning and preparing to better serve our community.

Este pasado sábado 8 de agosto, vivimos una excelente jornada de aprendizaje, preparación y compromiso con la salud de nuestra comunidad. Nuestros participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de fortalecer sus conocimientos y adquirir nuevas herramientas para continuar promoviendo la prevención, educación y pruebas de VIH.

At the AIDS2026 Conference in Brazil, a powerful session emerged from global public health leaders and researchers.

Mira Adam (University of California San Francisco – IGHS, studying Sudan 🇸🇩), Serhii Riabokon (Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine 🇺🇦), Pyi Aung Hein (Myanmar Positive Group 🇲🇲), Andrea Lilian Boccardi Vidarte (UNAIDS, Brazil, with work in Peru 🇵🇪), and Ramona Godbole (Heidelberg Institute of Global Health 🇺🇸) highlighted a common reality:

Every time there is war, conflict, forced displacement, immigration or cuts to HIV funding, HIV services are disrupted—and people pay the price.

There are 41.6 million refugees and a total of 117.8 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, according to UNHCR data.
There are an estimated 304 million international migrants globally.

Communities affected by conflict and humanitarian crises face interrupted treatment, reduced access to prevention and testing, shortages of medicines, and increased vulnerability. Sustaining HIV services during emergencies is essential to protecting lives and maintaining progress toward ending AIDS as a public health threat.



En la Conferencia en Brasil, una poderosa sesión reunió a líderes e investigadores de la salud pública mundial.

The exhibition site at the 26th International AIDS Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where delegates can explore over 2,400 posters detailing the latest HIV science, treatments, and advocacy from around the world. Where research and community met. We can’t advance in HIV without investigation of what is happening, what is working and what is not. These are some of the posters we saw today and talk with some researchers around the world 🌎
CALA was part 🙌🏾 of one of the exhibition: More than Walls, Space Transformations in the South with the University of Houston, Graduate College of Social Work.

El espacio de exposición de la 26.ª Conferencia Internacional sobre el Sida en Río de Janeiro, Brasil, donde los delegados pueden explorar más de 2400 pósteres que detallan los últimos avances científicos, tratamientos y labores de incidencia en torno al VIH a nivel mundial. Un lugar de encuentro entre la investigación y la comunidad. No podemos avanzar en la lucha contra el VIH sin investigar qué está sucediendo, qué funciona y qué no. Esta fusión utiliza la creatividad para educar y movilizar:

* Proyectos globales: Iniciativas internacionales como Visual AIDS, IAS o programas institucionales en ONUSIDA apoyan a artistas que viven con el virus.
