Attention Booth Park fans: the park is scheduled to close the week of Monday, Sept. 14, as construction of the Booth Park entry plaza and trail improvement project gets underway. The closure includes the playground and the Booth Park entrance to/exit from the Rouge River chip trail. The park will remain completely closed until summer 2027 as crews work through the winter into the warmer weather on this major project, which includes an accessible seating and gathering area, a trail entry identifier and signage, a restroom facility and more.

We appreciate your patience while crews build a better, more accessible entrance to Booth Park! In the meantime, check out Birmingham’s 24 other parks, including fun new playgrounds at Poppleton, Pumphouse and West Lincoln Well parks. Finding a parking spot downtown just got easier. The City of Birmingham’s website now features real-time availability for all five city parking garages. Just click the green “parking” button at the top of bhamgov.org to live occupancy before you head uptown.

And remember: the first two hours are always free in city parking structures!

9/11/26 UPDATE: All appointments are filled! Thank you for a terrific response to this request!

Do you live in a house that was built in 1988 or earlier and wonder about the quality of your drinking water? Wonder no more by participating in a voluntary Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) water sampling program starting the week of Sept. 14!

In exchange for allowing a technician into your home for several minutes to collect water samples one morning, you’ll receive a formal water quality report at no cost. Appointments are available Sept. 15 through 17; call Karen Hanson at HydroCorp at 800.462.6036 now to schedule yours!

The sampling program’s intent is to protect public health by minimizing lead and copper in our drinking water. As part of this, EGLE requires the City of Birmingham and other Michigan communities to collect drinking water samples annually from at least 30 homes and businesses — and as of today, more homes are still needed. By participating, you'll help the city monitor water quality and receive a free assessment of your household water.

Scheduling is happening this week, the week of Sept. 7, so immediate participation is key! Let’s work together to keep Birmingham’s water clean and safe.

Happy 40th Shain Park anniversary to the magnificent Freedom of the Human Spirit, which was dedicated and placed in Shain Park on this date in 1986!

Created by prominent 20th century sculptor Marshall Fredericks, the sculpture was presented to the city in 1983 to celebrate Birmingham’s 50th anniversary and is now an integral part of the city’s identity.
