Join us for our next event!
On June 19 "Juneteenth Celebration of the Taylor and Harris Family" at noon at Greenwood Cemetery.
This special event will honor the stories of George and Eliza Dosier Taylor and Abe and Abbie Farmer Harris, who formed an early Black community in Birmingham. The Taylors were both formerly enslaved and met in the area after the Civil War, making Birmingham their final home. They were the first African American property owners here and were connected through their daughter to the Harris family of Royal Oak. Museum staff invite the public to join them in a Juneteenth celebration of the Taylors and Harrises on Friday, June 19 at 12 noon at the Taylor burial site in Section E of Greenwood Cemetery.

Help shape policies and priorities for Birmingham now and in the future! Participate in the Birmingham resident priority study by taking a survey at cobaltcommunityresearch.org/Birmingham through June 15 (enter “Birmingham” for the study ID).

The survey takes less than 10 minutes and will help guide investment of tax dollars into priorities that matter most to Birmingham residents. Responses are anonymous, and findings will be objectively analyzed by an outside organization, the nonprofit nonpartisan Cobalt Community Research. Cobalt kicked off the effort by gathering feedback from a random sample of residents before opening the survey to all other residents this week. Now’s your chance: tell us what you want through June 15!

Questions? Contact Melissa Fairbairn at (248) 530-1807. Thanks in advance for your insight!

Operation flower power is underway in Birmingham! With the threat of snow finally over for the season, DPS workers are busy planting the 35,000 individual flowers that will brighten beds across the city this summer.

They started last week by filling the planter troughs that surround the base of trees in the downtown shopping district. These troughs, which protect the flowers and the tree roots from damage, are currently spending a little time growing in the DPS yard before installation.

Meanwhile, the planting crews are moving on to beds in parks and other city properties. If you see them, be sure to give them a wave and say thanks as they help summer arrive in full color!
