You could be the game changer in a child’s story.

For a child experiencing uncertainty, having a safe, supportive family can change everything.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing to open your heart and your home.

We’re working to be a game changer for children and families across Alabama—and we need people like you to help make that possible.

The back-to-school season is full of checklists:
✔ Backpack
✔ Lunchbox
✔ School supplies
✔ New shoes

But there's one checklist that's easy to forget—our child's emotional readiness.

The first few weeks of school can bring excitement, uncertainty, and stress. Helping children feel safe, connected, and supported doesn't remove every challenge, but it gives them a stronger foundation to handle them.

As you get ready for the new school year, remember: emotional health is just as important as academic success.

💬 What do you want your child to remember most at the end of the school day?

Sometimes the most powerful change we can make is changing the question we ask.

Children who have experienced trauma may communicate through behaviors that are often misunderstood. Instead of asking, "What's wrong with this child?" we can ask, "What happened to this child?"

This simple shift helps us move from frustration to understanding, from punishment to support, and from judgment to compassion.

When children feel safe, understood, and supported, healing becomes possible. Together, we can make a difference—one child at a time. 💙

We had a great time on Saturday providing resources and helping distribute school supplies at the Back to School Resource Fair hosted by the Children's Policy Council of Jefferson County Alabama and the UAB Educational Opportunity Center at the 5 Points West Library.

We're grateful to be part of this community event and to support the children and families in our area as they prepare for a successful school year. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success!

We want to extend our sincere thanks to the Alabama Department of Mental Health for the opportunity to participate in this week's Mental Health Matters: A Better You, A Better ADMH conference.

Our Clinical Manager for Therapeutic Services, Carolyn Pickett, was honored to present "Beyond Awareness: Trauma Treatment that Improves Outcomes," sharing approaches to helping children heal from trauma and achieve better outcomes.

It was a wonderful two days of learning, collaboration, and meaningful conversations with professionals dedicated to improving mental health services across Alabama. We appreciate the opportunity to share information about children and trauma and to be part of such an impactful event!

This National Foster Care Appreciation Month, we’re celebrating the incredible people who open their hearts and homes to youth across Alabama — and encouraging others to consider making a difference through foster care.

Opening your home to a child in foster care can have a lasting impact. Foster parents help create safe, caring environments where youth feel supported, encouraged, and valued during difficult times. While the journey can come with challenges, many families find fostering to be an incredibly meaningful and rewarding experience.

There are Alabama youth right now who need someone to believe in them and help them build a brighter future. Could that someone be you?

May is National Foster Care Month, and at Gateway, we want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate our incredible foster parents. 💙

Our foster families open their hearts and homes to youth in need every single day. They provide stability, encouragement, support, and compassion during some of the most important moments in a young person’s life. The impact they make reaches far beyond what words can express, and we are deeply grateful for everything they do for the children and families we serve.

Earlier this week, we hosted a Foster Parent Appreciation Dinner as a small way to say thank you to these amazing individuals. Foster parents were presented with certificates of recognition and gift cards to show our appreciation for their dedication and commitment to the youth in their care.

While we may only have a few snapshots from the evening, these photos represent a night filled with gratitude, celebration, and recognition for the people who make such a meaningful difference every day.

To all of our Gateway foster parents: thank you for your kindness, patience, advocacy, and unwavering support. You are truly changing lives.
