Thoughts on the morning drive ..... the Trump Administration just won big at the Supreme Court related to mail-in ballots!
There's a lot of confusion about what the ruling was, and what it wasn't. You may recall that recently President Trump issued an executive order directing that the US Postal Service develop more stringent guidelines for mailing election ballots.
Some states, like California, mail them to every resident without regard for actual eligibility. Other states have voter roles that are not clear or defined. But when the Trump Administration issued the executive order 23 States immediately filed suit to stop the USPS from mailing ballots only to registered voters.
It's not hard to imagine the amount of fraud that can occur when ballots are simply flung to the winds. Especially in states that don't have voter ID or have spent time removing non-voters from its roles.
The Supreme Court considered the fact that the District Court in Boston originally enjoined the Trump administration's actions. But it reversed the lower course decision and allowed the executive order to go forward.
Here's the catch that has people confused: SCOTUS did not rule on the merits of the case. What it did instead was tell the states that they were ahead of schedule on any claims of harm. In other words they filed suit on an anticipatory issue, as opposed to real harm. The court said you cannot stop the government from having an idea, you have to wait until you're actually facing real harm and not just predicting it.
So for now, we get to see the Postal Service mail ballots only to those who are supposed to receive them as opposed to anyone and everyone who lives in a state whether legally, non-citizen, or otherwise.
It's a good day for voter integrity. Let's hope it holds.
