(WASHINGTON, D.C.) Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar has been called to Washington D.C. to testify before the House Committee on the Judiciary this week regarding New Yorkโs โLocal Cops, Local Crimes Actโ and the subsequent lawsuit filed by 15 New York State sheriffโs challenging the ability of the Governor to cancel federal contracts with independently elected members of law enforcement.
โLast week, we received a request from Congress to appear at a hearing and share our perspective on this issue and how it affects the work being done by the men and women at the Broome County Sheriffโs Office to serve and protect the people of Broome County,โ said Sheriff Fred Akshar. โWe are honoring that request.โ
Sheriff Akshar will appear before the Subcommittee on Integrity, Security and Enforcement at a hearing titled โThe Continuing Tragedy of Sanctuary Lawsโ on September 15, 2026 at 10:00 AM.
โIโve recently been asked, why would you file a lawsuit against two of the most powerful politicians in Albany?โ said Sheriff Akshar. โThe answer is simple: Because itโs about standing up for whatโs right and standing up for Public Safety. Itโs standing up for the job the men and women in uniform, including those behind me today do every day. Itโs about standing up against the continued erosion of accountability and common sense in our criminal justice system. Itโs standing up on behalf of the victims of preventable tragedies perpetrated by criminals who have been coddled by opportunistic politicians and out-of-touch activists. Itโs standing up for people like my fellow witnesses and countless whoโve endured unimaginable pain because of decisions made out of political expediency rather than right and wrong. Itโs standing up for the safety of my own 6-year-old son, my family and countless other families who should never be needlessly put in harmโs way because of political gamesmanship, grandstanding and theater.โ
โWe must find a way to stop talking past each other and start working together,โ Akshar concluded. โThis new Albany law is just more of the same empty and cynical tactics from bureaucrats that put partisan politics before public safety.โ
