🏰 FROM FORT LOUIS TO THE LA POINTE-KREBS HOUSE

Across from the History Museum of Mobile and Fort Condé, a small plaque marks a place with a very big history.

It identifies the site of Fort Louis de la Louisiane, established in 1711, when the French moved their colonial settlement from the original Mobile site at Twenty-Seven Mile Bluff to the location of present-day Mobile.

By this time, Joseph Simon de LaPointe was already part of the French colonial world along the Gulf Coast. His name appears in records connected to the early Louisiana colony, and his family would eventually become part of the story of the La Pointe-Krebs House.

The fort, the settlement, the soldiers, the families, the movement of people between Mobile and the Mississippi coast, these weren't separate histories. They were all part of the same developing colonial community.

And this October, we're bringing a little of that history together again!

The History Museum of Mobile will be joining us at Cattails & Cocktails on Krebs Lake for living-history demonstrations, giving visitors a chance to experience some of the skills and traditions of the colonial period.

Come explore the La Pointe-Krebs House, enjoy the demonstrations, visit with fellow history lovers, and discover the connections between the people and places that shaped our Gulf Coast.

🎣 The Tony Trapani Oyster Reef in the Bay of St. Louis was designed, in-part, to enhance recreational fishing opportunities along the Mississippi Coast. For those who want to fish near the reef, the yellow dots on this map show the location of the corners. Two pilings also mark the south side of the reef, off of the channel leading to Bayou Portage. Since the reef isn't square, center coordinates include:

Meet Geneva Dummer — Entrepreneur, Veteran, Mentor, and Community Builder

The Rotary Club of Biloxi is proud to spotlight Geneva Dummer, a longtime Gulf Coast business owner and community leader whose work reflects a deep commitment to helping others succeed. Geneva is the founder and owner of The Meeting Place, a Biloxi-based shared workspace and business incubator that has helped entrepreneurs and small businesses grow by providing flexible workspace, resources, and a place to connect. Her entrepreneurial leadership was recently recognized when she was named the 2026 Mississippi Veteran Small Business Owner of the Year.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Geneva also serves as a Business Counselor and Boots to Business instructor through Mississippi State University’s Veteran Business Outreach Center, helping transitioning service members explore entrepreneurship and turn their skills and ideas into viable businesses. Her commitment to veterans and small-business development is a natural extension of her own journey from military service to entrepreneurship.

Geneva’s impact reaches well beyond business. For more than a decade, she has served as an administrator with the Heritage Trails Partnership of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, helping advance a coast-wide network of trails that connects neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and the Gulf Coast’s historic, natural, and recreational spaces. She has also served in leadership roles with organizations focused on economic development, walkability, and community vitality.

Geneva embodies the kind of leadership we celebrate in Rotary: building businesses, opening doors for others, serving her community, and helping create a stronger Mississippi Gulf Coast. We are grateful for the many ways she continues to put service, entrepreneurship, and community connection into action.
