Our Story

For over 40 years, Tumbleweed has provided safety, stability and hope to vulnerable and homeless youth, creating lasting life changes. We are a non-profit community-based organization that offers help to runaway, homeless and at risk youth and their families. Tumbleweed’s crisis counseling and prevention services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All services are available at no cost. In addition to crisis intervention, advocacy and referrals, Tumbleweed offers individual and family counseling, temporary shelter and transitional housing, life skills programming and direct-care services designed specifically for human trafficking victims. Tumbleweed is one of three nationwide recipients of a demonstration grant to address human trafficking in rural communities. Since the launch of our program 18 months ago, we have served over 70 young victims of s*x and labor trafficking. 80% of these victims have been identified through our drop-in center, which provides a safe overnight alternative for youth six nights a week. By decreasing the vulnerabilities faced on the street, we see systematic improvement of outcomes, particularly for victims of human trafficking. Tumbleweed utilizes evidence-based models for trauma-informed care and positive youth development. Our staff of trained professionals strive to meet youth where they’re at and build individualized support systems designed to help adolescents and young adults move from surviving to thriving. Tumbleweed’s supportive environments empower youth to live healthy, stable lifestyles. In addition to our drop-in center, human trafficking, foster care independance and crisis prevention programs, Tumbleweed also houses nearly a dozen youth at any one time in our transitional living homes. Our ultimate goal is to end youth homelessness. Tumbleweed’s wraparound approach addresses the three most critical pieces of the equation: employability, stable housing and access to support systems that enable youth to succeed. Last year, we served over 1,100 youth and families, helping provide stability and build a solid foundation for short-term and future development.
