Our Brother’s Keeper was honored to welcome Congressman John Moolenaar to the shelter this week for a visit and tour of the facility.

During his visit, Congressman Moolenaar connected with our Board and staff, and learned more about the day to day work involved in supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness in our community. We appreciated the opportunity to share more about the programs, services, and ongoing efforts that provide stability, safety, and support to those we serve.

We are grateful when local and federal leaders take the time to visit and gain a deeper understanding of the realities of homelessness in our area. Continued awareness and engagement help strengthen the partnerships needed to support some of our most vulnerable community members.

Thank you again, Congressman, for stopping by and for your interest in the work being done at OBK.

From October 1, 2025 through April 1, 2026, our Emergency Overnight Warming Station provided 237 bed nights of safe, warm shelter during some of the coldest months of the year.

Behind that number are real people experiencing a need for safe shelter during freezing temperatures. This season, we served 1 child and 43 adults, including 11 female guests and 32 male guests. Among those, 9 were seniors.

Each bed night represents a moment where someone was no longer alone in the cold. A night where fear, exposure, and uncertainty were replaced with safety and care, even if just for a few hours.

This work is only possible because of community support.

Become Your Brother’s Keeper by joining our monthly giving program. Your recurring support directly fuels shelter operations, helps us respond to immediate needs, and ensures we can keep our doors open for those who have nowhere else to turn. Monthly giving is one of the most impactful ways to stand with your neighbors year-round, providing stability when it is needed most and strengthening our ability to care for our community every single day.

No one expects to find themselves without a place to go.

For some, it’s losing a place they’ve called home.
For others, it’s working hard every day and still not being able to get ahead.
And for many, it’s the uncertainty of not knowing where they’ll sleep next.

We see it every day at Our Brother’s Keeper.

And it can feel overwhelming to know how to help when the need feels this close.

But there is a simple way to stand in that gap.

Through consistent monthly support, Our Brother’s Keeper is able to provide shelter, meals, and a path forward for individuals and families working toward stability.

This is how we move from crisis to lasting change.

Become Your Brother’s Keeper 🩵

• $32 provides one night of shelter and meals for an individual in crisis
• $50 helps families take their first steps toward stability with guidance and support from our case managers
• $100 supports individuals and families rebuilding their lives through recovery and employment
• $250 helps a family move into permanent housing and remain stable long-term

When you give monthly, you are not just helping in the moment. You are helping someone keep going.

Thank you for choosing to stand with your neighbors and be part of their next step forward.

Housing in Michigan is at a breaking point, and we are seeing it firsthand at Our Brother’s Keeper.

According to the 2026 Michigan Housing Profile from the National Low Income Housing Coalition, there are only 37 affordable and available rental homes for every 100 extremely low-income households. That gap is not just a statistic. It is the reason many of our guests are stuck in shelter longer than they should be, even when they are working and doing everything they can.

A full-time worker in Michigan now needs to earn over $24/hour to afford a modest apartment. Many of the individuals we serve are working, receiving income, and actively searching for housing, and others are seniors or individuals living with disabilities who are navigating the same impossible market.

But the reality is that the cost of rent continues to outpace wages.

This is what the housing crisis looks like in real life.

We are proud to provide shelter, stability, and support, but the real solution is more affordable housing in our communities. Until that happens, shelters like ours will continue to be a critical safety net.

If you have ever wondered why homelessness exists even among people who are trying their best, this is why.

If you or someone you know is in need of emergency shelter, please contact us at 231-629-8160 or [email protected].

OBK Executive Director, Jeffrey Auguste, recently attended Homelessness Advocacy Day hosted by the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness (MCAH). It was an impactful day of connecting with advocates, policymakers, and community leaders committed to strengthening housing stability across Michigan.

A highlight of the day was meeting directly with legislative leaders and staff, including Parker, Legislative Staff for State Representative Will Snyder; Senator Roger Victory; and State Representative Betsy Coffia. These conversations are critical to ensuring the voices of those we serve are heard at the state level and that housing stability remains a legislative priority.

During the event, MCAH highlighted key legislative priorities for 2026 aimed at improving fairness and transparency in housing:

🏠 Tenant Protections Bill Package (SB 372–375)
This package focuses on fair tenant screening, clearer lease agreements, and reducing unnecessary barriers that can lead to evictions. It promotes reusable application reports, limits excessive fees, and strengthens tenant rights in the screening process.

⚖️ Eviction Protections Legislative Package (HB 4982–4985)
These bills aim to reduce preventable evictions by extending notice and redemption periods, giving families more time to access resources and stay housed. They also include provisions to seal eviction records in appropriate cases, helping people move forward without long-term barriers.

Eviction remains a leading driver of homelessness, and these efforts are centered on prevention, fairness, and long-term stability for individuals and families.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to be part of these important conversations alongside MCAH and to connect with a wide range of organizations, including local partners, Mid Michigan Community Action and TrueNorth Community Services. Together, we continue working toward stronger housing stability across Michigan.
