The Big Rapids Police Department is proud to announce its participation in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 25th. The event will take place from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Big Rapids Police Department at 435 N Michigan Ave.
This initiative, held in coordination with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), provides a safe, convenient, and anonymous way for community members to dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
"Our goal is to provide a localized solution to a national problem," said Community Relations Officer William Sell. "By removing these medications from our homes, we are actively preventing drug addiction and overdose deaths right here in our community."
Community members are encouraged to bring pills and patches for disposal. Please note that the site cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps.
The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. Since its inception, National Take Back Day has removed millions of pounds of medication from circulation across the country.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the April 25th Take Back Day event, please visit the DEA Diversion Control Division website, www.dea.gov/takebackday.
