Construction continues on Phase 2 the Alfred Street Sewer Separation Project.

The traffic plan for this phase of the project originally called for two-way traffic flows through the work zone. With work now underway, we have determined that alternating one-way traffic is the safest option for drivers. As a reminder, please travel cautiously through the work zone and follow all instructions from flaggers.

Yesterday, Maine Water completed an emergency dig at the intersection of Prospect and Porter Streets to repair a water main. Please note that this unexpected work was not related to this project or completed by the City.

During the Alfred Street Sewer Separation Project, the previous single-pipe sewer system will be replaced with separate pipes for sewer and stormwater flows. Once the replacement is complete, stormwater runoff will be discharged directly into receiving waterbodies, while wastewater will be treated before discharge, improving water quality. We thank you for your patience as we work to complete this critical work.

The City recently made the decision to remove the public grills located throughout our park system. While we understand that these grills have been enjoyed by many residents and visitors over the years, the decision was made after careful consideration of several ongoing safety and maintenance concerns.

In recent years, we have experienced an increase in incidents involving grills being left unattended while in use, creating a significant fire risk to park users, surrounding vegetation, and nearby facilities. In addition, staff have regularly encountered grills that were not properly extinguished, requiring intervention to ensure public safety.

The grills have also been subject to vandalism and misuse, resulting in damage that has increased maintenance costs and reduced their safe operation. Unfortunately, we have also observed instances where grills were being used in ways that were not intended, creating additional safety hazards for both users and other visitors enjoying the parks.

As stewards of public spaces, the City has a responsibility to provide a safe environment for all residents and visitors. After evaluating the frequency of these issues, the costs associated with repairs and maintenance, and the potential liability associated with unsafe use, the decision was made to remove the grills from City parks.

We recognize that this change may be disappointing to some park users. However, the decision was made with the overall safety of our community in mind. We remain committed to providing clean, safe, and enjoyable parks and recreational spaces for everyone and will continue to evaluate amenities and park improvements that best serve the needs of our residents.
