GRATEFUL to HAWC; Healing Abuse Working for Change, for giving me the honor to represent the Greater Beverly Chamber of Commerce as the Grand Marshal for their annual Walk fundraiser this past Sunday in Salem.

Over 400 people participated in the 5k walk and run. The energy was electric and it was so much fun!!

Why the GBCC? When HAWC Executive Director Sara Stanley said they chose me to be their Grand Marshal, it was because the GBCC, without hesitation, led a series of "Workforce IS a Domestic Violence Issue" forums to raise awareness that employees may experience abuse at work from their domestic partner but are too embarrassed to discuss it in fear of losing their job. As a business organization this is a topic few want to deal with, but it's a reality employers need to address if they care about the people who work for them. It was an opportunity to open a box of silence and shed light on an issue that IS happening.

This all started when David Thomson, Executive Director of Employers Against Domestic Violence approached me to discuss this issue several years ago. He is the reason for the opportunity I received.

The GBCC will continue to address this and other issues to educate our members to create a stronger and compassionate business community.

GRATITUDE ❣️

ABOUT HAWC:
For almost 40 years, HAWC strives to help abused women, children, men, and nonbinary people live free from violence and fear. As a leading domestic abuse agency in Massachusetts, HAWC provides a domestic abuse helpline, emergency shelter, legal services, advocacy and counseling services to more than 2,500 families in the North Shore area each year.

Beyond providing this help, HAWC advocates for social and cultural change. With one in three women and one in four men experiencing abuse each year, domestic abuse is an epidemic. To raise awareness and bolster prevention efforts, HAWC supplies the public with education, volunteer opportunities, annual community events, and frequent updates on related news and legislation.

THIS POST IS LONG OVERDUE! I want to extend a HEARTFELT THANK YOU to the Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, Businesswomen's Luncheon Committee for giving me the honor to participate on the Wave Makers - Tide Changers panel!! With almost 30 years serving as an Chamber Executive Director in three communities on the North Shore, you reflect and hope, that perhaps your journey can help someone trying to navigate similar challenges and provide practical advice mixed with Gemini humor.

I was hired at the Marblehead Chamber as the Director and yet I still wasn't sure what a Chamber of Commerce was until I read the Greater Cape Ann Chamber newsletter back in 1998! Of all the chamber newsletters that came to the Marblehead Chamber the GCACC had a huge variety of initiatives. BINGO!! I now felt I knew what I needed to do to create a solid organization.

I addressed the difference between having a job and having a career, challenging personal situations that disrupted my workday and navigating it. I talked about how leadership should not be about ego but solving problems and positive progress.

My goal in college was to be a tv reporter but that's not what fate had in store for me. I fell into a career I never saw comming and I am just as passionate about it today as I was decades ago. I love what I do!

Everyone deals with a work life balance, no one is without failure and everyone can drive their destiny with good choices and great people in their life.

Thank you to all my friends and colleagues who attended the Luncheon and to all those who have stuck by me all these years.

THANK YOU Chairs Lindsey Egan and Jill Burgess and GCACC Event Manager Michelle Pepin. I am beyond grateful that you gave me this opportunity. ❤

The Greater Beverly Chamber of Commerce recently held a Business After Hours with the Children's Center For Communication Beverly School For The Deaf. Celebrating 150 years as an invaluable resource for student and families, the Children’s Center for Communication provides highly specialized academic programs to support the individual learning and communication needs of students from birth through age 22 and includes preschool, elementary, middle and high school students.

If you haven't toured the campus, take an hour and witness the amazing opportunities and magic happening within the school. 👏👏👏 Bravo to school leadership of Dr. Karen Hopkins and her team of skilled and highly trained teachers and development team.

In 2026, The Children’s Center for Communication/Beverly School for the Deaf (CCCBSD) proudly celebrates its 150th anniversary, marking a century and a half of educating, supporting, and advocating for deaf, hard-of-hearing, and disabled children and their families. Founded in 1876, CCCBSD has been a cornerstone and leader of inclusive education in Beverly and across the North Shore, evolving alongside advances in education, language access, and disability services while remaining rooted in its mission to meet each child where they are.

Throughout 2026, CCCBSD will commemorate this milestone with a year-long series of events, inviting the community to reflect on the school’s history, celebrate its present impact, and look ahead to its future. Events will include opportunities for storytelling, community engagement, education, and celebration—highlighting the experiences of students, families, alumni, staff, and partners who have shaped CCCBSD across generations.

I want to express a heartfelt thank you to Rotarian and GCACC member Ruth Pino for inviting me to speak at the Rotary Club of Gloucester. The Club was very warm and welcoming and I appreciated that!

Ruth; a successful real estate broker with REMAX Beacon, is a longstanding member of both organizations and a community leader. She has been a colleague, friend and cheerleader of mine for many years. So when she asked me to come speak I was truly honored.

Running a business is all about common sense but you can't rely on that alone. I discussed how it's important to find creative ways to help our business members, to be accessible and learn about their business journey. I touched on the importance of collaborations and why working together to reach a goal hopefully strengthens the outcome. I used several Beverly business as examples of creating community within their business, that has nothing to do with discounts and deals, to build their brand and customer awareness that ultimately leads to sales. I also mentioned the arts, culture and entertainment scene that is one of Beverly's greatest strengths. Lastly I mentioned the Creative Collective and The Bower- "Launched by Montserrat College of Art, The Bower, the North Shore’s premier creative hub: a 36,000-square-foot ecosystem where education, entrepreneurship, and the arts intersect to anchor the Beverly Arts District."

Due to time, what I didnt touch on is the ever-changing landscape of A.I. and social media and that businesses must continue to use it creatively; the tourism foundation we're starting to build to bring more people to our retail stores. A hotel is a drum I've been beating for years because it allows people to stay and explore all that Beverly has to offer...and there's a lot!!! 🤞🤞

I can't say I have all the answers. I don't. But I have witnessed GBCC members working hard to create a sense of community that ultimately leads to building their business. In the end a little shift can make a difference and I hope what I did say resonated with those in attendance.

Again thank you Ruth and Gloucester Rotary for giving me the opportunity to visit you today!
