Many people assume their dog is just excited on a warm day, but recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion early is vital for their safety. When a dog spends too much time in the heat, the internal temperature climbs rapidly toward dangerous levels.

1. Move the animal to a shaded spot or indoors immediately to stop further heat absorption.
2. Apply cool, room-temperature water to areas where the blood vessels are closest to the skin, specifically the neck, armpits, and groin area, to help dissipate heat.
3. Position a fan to blow across these dampened areas, as this encourages evaporation which cools the body down more efficiently than just wetting the fur.
4. Check the color of the gums, as healthy pink color is a sign of recovery, while pale or blue shades indicate the situation has become critical.

Never wait for the animal to stop panting on their own if they seem distressed, as professional medical intervention is the only way to reverse severe heatstroke.
