🏠 More You Know Monday!

Did you know that your deed is a public record? Once a deed is recorded with the Registry of Deeds, members of the public can search for and view the recorded document.

That public record helps establish the history of property ownership and makes it possible for homeowners, attorneys, lenders, researchers, and others to review land records when needed.

πŸ’» Many of our records can be searched online from home through our website β€” no trip to the Registry required!

Today marks 25 years since the attacks of September 11, 2001.

We remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day, the families and communities forever changed, and the first responders, public servants, members of the military, and countless others who answered the call to help.

We also honor the courage, compassion, and sense of unity shown in the days and weeks that followed.

Twenty-five years later, we pause to remember those who were taken from us and to honor all whose lives were forever shaped by September 11.

We will never forget. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Throwback Thursday: A Beverly Connection to an American Patriot

On September 10, 1776, 21-year-old Continental Army Captain Nathan Hale set out on one of the most famous intelligence missions of the American Revolution.
With General George Washington in need of information about British troop movements, Hale went behind British lines on Long Island disguised as a schoolteacher. He was eventually captured and executed as a spy on September 22, 1776.

But Nathan Hale’s story also has a connection to our own Southern Essex community.

Hale was the great-grandson of Rev. John Hale, the longtime minister of Beverly and an important figure in the Salem witch trials of 1692. John Hale initially supported the proceedings but later questioned them after his own wife was accused of witchcraft. He went on to write critically about the events before his death in 1700.

More than 80 years later, his great-grandson would become one of the best-known patriots of the American Revolution. It’s another reminder that the history found throughout Southern Essex connects to some of the most important chapters in American history.

🏠 Website Wednesday:Yesterday we talked about recording a new Declaration of Homestead when property is transferred into or out of a trust. But how do you know whether you have an active one or not?

You can search our recorded documents online at SalemDeeds.com to see whether a Declaration of Homestead appears in the property record.

A homestead declaration can be an important part of protecting your primary residence, so it is worth knowing what has already been recorded, or if you still need to record one.

Need help navigating our website? We offer one-on-one and group training sessions to help you learn how to search our records. To schedule a training, contact: [email protected]
