Stay Safe During an Earthquake: Drop, Cover, and Hold On

- Drop: Wherever you are, drop down onto your hands and knees. If you’re using a wheelchair or walker with a seat, make sure your wheels are locked and remain seated until the shaking stops.
- Cover: Cover your head and neck with your arms. If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter. If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows). Crawl only if you can reach better cover without going through an area with more debris. Stay on your knees or bent over to protect vital organs.
- Hold on: If you are under a table or desk, hold on with one hand and be ready to move with it if it moves. If seated and unable to drop to the floor, bend forward, cover your head with your arms, and hold on to your neck with both hands.

EL NIÑO & WINTER STORM PREPAREDNESS

The City of Beverly Hills is preparing for the potential impacts of El Niño and severe winter weather, and we encourage our community to prepare with us.

How is the City Preparing.

Public Works is inspecting and maintaining storm drains, pumps, and drainage systems; monitoring areas prone to flooding; and preparing equipment and sandbags for storm response.

The Beverly Hills Fire Department is coordinating emergency planning, monitoring potential hazards, preparing response resources, and working with regional partners.

How You Can Prepare:

- Clear gutters, downspouts, drains, and areas where water may collect.
- Check sump pumps and drainage systems to make sure they are working properly.
- Repair roof leaks and address areas where water could enter your home.
- Secure trash cans, patio furniture, umbrellas, decorations, and other outdoor items.
- Prepare an emergency supply kit with food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and other essentials.
- Keep important documents and emergency contact information readily available.
- Keep your vehicle fueled or charged before a major storm.
- Review your family’s emergency and evacuation plan.
- Check on older adults, neighbors, and others who may need additional assistance.

The C.E.R.T. training is delivered by a team of Beverly Hills Fire Department personnel and certified instructors providing the foundational training and basic skills that are important to know when emergency services are not immediately available.

You can make a difference by using the training to save lives and protect property in disasters like earthquakes, fires, terrorism, hazardous incidents, and other general life-threatening situations.

C.E.R.T’s may:

Assist emergency services personnel when requested under standard operating procedures (SOPs) developed by the sponsoring agency and by area of training.

Assume some of the same functions as emergency services personnel following a disaster, only when activated and deployed by city officials.

Prepare families and communities before emergencies and assist neighbors during an emergency when first responders are not immediately available.

The City of Beverly Hills and the BHFD cordially invites the community of Beverly Hills to participate and sign up for C.E.R.T. training, starting in October.

The Community Emergency Response Team is a volunteer group of trained neighbors in such as fist aid, fire extinguisher use, bleeding control, active shooter and awareness, disaster preparedness and psychological first aid, among other life saving techniques.

UPDATE 12:45 pm: The Beverly Hills Fire Department has declared a knockdown and the fire is under control. Two firefighters have been transported to Cedars-Sinai, one for heat exhaustion and one for a minor burn. Crews are expected to remain on scene for several hours. School pickup at Beverly Vista Middle School will not be affected. Rexford between Charleville and Gregory remains closed.

11:51 a.m. At approximately 10:30 a.m. this morning, the Beverly Hills Fire Department responded to a fire at a two-story apartment complex in the 200 block of S. Rexford Dr. Most of the building was engulfed at the time. Neighboring buildings adjacent to the blaze were evacuated. As firefighters attacked the fire, the roof began collapsing, so firefighters retreated and are using area ladder trucks to battle the blaze. There are no injuries reported. Out of an abundance of caution, students at nearby Beverly Vista Middle School are under a shelter in place order. Los Angeles County Fire is also assisting on scene. Rexford Drive between Charleville and Gregory Way is currently closed.
