Sometimes the most important thing we can offer another person is simply our presence.

At St. Vincent de Paul Long Island, our Vincentians know the power of listening without judgment, meeting people with compassion, and reminding our neighbors that they do not have to face difficult times alone.

On World Su***de Prevention Day, we encourage everyone to check in on the people around you. A phone call. A conversation. A willingness to listen. A simple “How are you really doing?” can matter more than we realize.

💚 Honoring Blessed Rosalie Rendu

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Blessed Rosalie Rendu, a Daughter of Charity whose life of service helped shape the Vincentian mission we continue today.

In 19th-century Paris, Sister Rosalie dedicated her life to serving people experiencing poverty. When a young Frédéric Ozanam and his friends wanted to turn their faith into meaningful action, she became their mentor—teaching them that true charity begins by going directly to those in need, entering their homes, listening to their stories, and treating every person with dignity and compassion.

That spirit remains at the heart of St. Vincent de Paul Long Island today.

Our Vincentians still go out two by two, meeting neighbors in their homes, listening first and offering not only practical assistance, but friendship, respect and hope.

Nearly two centuries later, Blessed Rosalie's example reminds us that sometimes the most powerful way to help someone is simply to show up.

💚 Celebrating Blessed Frédéric Ozanam

Today, we honor Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the visionary whose compassion sparked a worldwide movement of neighbors helping neighbors.

In 1833, at just 20 years old, Frédéric and a small group of friends set out to put their faith into action by personally visiting people experiencing poverty—listening to them, understanding their struggles, and offering help with dignity and respect.

Nearly two centuries later, his vision lives on right here on Long Island.

Every time a Vincentian knocks on a neighbor’s door, sits beside someone facing a difficult moment, listens without judgment, and offers a helping hand, Frédéric Ozanam’s legacy continues.

His belief was simple but powerful: faith calls us not only to see those in need, but to walk alongside them.

Today, we celebrate Blessed Frédéric and the thousands of Vincentians around the world who continue the mission he began.

💙 International Day of Charity 💚

Today, on International Day of Charity, we celebrate the power each of us has to make a difference in the life of another.

Nearly 200 years ago, a young college student named Frédéric Ozanam saw poverty and suffering in the streets of Paris and chose not simply to talk about it — he took action. With a small group of friends, he began visiting people in their homes, listening to their struggles and offering practical help with compassion and dignity. Those simple acts of friendship became the foundation of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

That same spirit is alive on Long Island today.

Every day, SVDPLI Vincentians go two by two into our communities, meeting neighbors where they are, listening first and helping families find a path forward.

Because charity is more than giving something away. It is seeing the person. It is showing up. It is turning compassion into action.

On International Day of Charity, we celebrate our Vincentians, donors, shoppers, partners and friends who make that possible.
