We sometimes confuse protecting our kids with preparing our kids.

Preparing them means recognizing that some struggle is NOT something we need to fix.

The disappointment of losing.
The frustration of waiting.
The discomfort of hearing no.
The temptation to quit something they committed to.
The embarrassment of making a mistake.
The challenge of figuring something out without an adult stepping in.

These are small, everyday opportunities for kids to practice the skills we hope they’ll have when the stakes are much higher.

Because frustration tolerance requires experiencing frustration.

Problem-solving requires having problems to solve.

Perseverance requires reaching the point where you want to quit—and continuing.

Responsibility requires being trusted with responsibilities.

And resilience requires discovering, over and over again:

“That was hard. I didn’t like it. And I got through it.”

Being a safe parent doesn’t mean creating a life without discomfort.

Sometimes it means standing beside your child while they experience it—without rescuing, shaming, dismissing, or taking over.

We can be their safe place without making every path easy.

🎁And maybe that’s one of the greatest gifts we can give them: not the belief that life won’t be hard, but the confidence that they can handle hard things.
