🌱🌼 Growing Together at Via! 🌼🌱
Two of the people we support, Deb and Tom, have been enjoying some sunshine and fresh air while getting their hands dirty - in the best way! With the help of our amazing DSPs, they took a trip to the store to pick out their own plants, carefully choosing what they wanted to grow.
Back at Via, the real fun began in our backyard garden. Everyone pitched in, digging, planting, and taking turns watering. It was a true team effort filled with smiles and laughter.
Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature isn’t just fun, it’s great for overall well-being. Gardening can help reduce stress, boost mood, and give a sense of accomplishment as participants watch their hard work grow and thrive. 🌿
Now, the garden is more than just a beautiful space, it’s something they can take pride in. Our participants will continue caring for their plants throughout the season, nurturing them every step of the way.
We can’t wait to see what blooms! 🌼

Congratulations to Kali C. on completing the NADSP I program! 👏
Programs like NADSP provide meaningful opportunities for Direct Support Professionals to continue learning, grow in their careers, and advance in the field, all while strengthening the support they provide each day.
Kali shared:
“Participating in the NADSP Career Ladder Program gave me the opportunity to reflect on my journey while strengthening my skills as a DSP. It deepened my understanding of the ‘why’ behind the work we do every day and further fueled my passion for the support I provide.”

We’re proud to offer career pathways that support professional development, including ongoing training and opportunities for advancement, along with eligibility for pay increases through the program.
Way to go, Kali! 🌟

We’re incredibly grateful to PennDOT and the Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust for awarding us transportation grants that made FIVE new wheelchair-accessible vans possible for our staff. This generous investment expands our ability to serve and ensures more individuals can access the support they need safely and reliably. Thank you, PennDOT and the Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust, for helping to drive our mission forward!🚐

We recently had the pleasure of working with two impressive high school students, Addy and Joyce, through DECA, an organization that prepares students for careers in business, marketing, finance, hospitality, and entrepreneurship through hands-on, real-world experiences.
As part of their project, Addy and Joyce met with our President & CEO, Lisa Walkiewicz, to learn more about Via’s mission and impact. They then put their skills to work, identifying opportunities to further promote our organization within the community.
Their hard work paid off! Addy and Joyce recently advanced to the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. They presented their project, focused on Via, both at the state competition in Hershey and again on the international stage at ICDC.
We’re inspired by their initiative, professionalism, and thoughtful approach. Congratulations to Joyce and Addy on successfully completing their project and representing it at such a high level, and thank you for your interest in supporting Via!

We are sincerely thankful to the Keystone Savings Foundation for their generous grant, which made it possible for Via to purchase an accessible van. Safe, reliable transportation is essential for so many of the people we serve. especially those who use wheelchairs. This new van helps ensure individuals can get to work, volunteer opportunities, and recreational activities with dignity and ease. Thank you, Keystone Savings Foundation, for helping us remove barriers and expand opportunities every day.

In Pennsylvania, 51.2% of people with disabilities are employed, a number that reflects progress, but also highlights the opportunity to do more.
At Via, we’re committed to helping close that gap by connecting individuals with meaningful employment opportunities and the supports they need to succeed.

Why does this matter?
📊 Nationally, only 37.9% of working-age people with disabilities are employed
📈 With employment supports, individuals see increased earnings and stronger career outcomes [dol.gov] [mathematica.org]

Through small group employment, supported employment, and community participation programs, Via helps individuals:
✔ Build skills and confidence
✔ Gain real-world work experience
✔ Connect to inclusive workplaces
Because everyone deserves the opportunity to work, grow, and contribute!

When Patrick, Pranav, and Logan shared that they wanted to build their cooking skills, their DSP, Marlene, helped turn that goal into a hands-on, real-world learning experience.
They kicked things off by choosing a menu of breakfast favorites, including eggs, pancakes, and sausage, then worked together to create a shopping list. From there, they headed to the store, compared prices and made thoughtful choices to get the most for their money. Back in the kitchen, they brought it all together and enjoyed the results of their hard work.
But this is just the beginning. In the coming weeks, they’ll continue exploring new recipes, plan picnic foods for a pre–4th of July celebration, and dive into learning about healthy eating. They'll categorize foods, learn about where they come from, and even visit a local farm.
Along the way, there have been some fun discoveries, like learning that pickles start as cucumbers (and yes, making their own pickles is now on the summer agenda!).
This is what person-centered support looks like: listening, encouraging curiosity, and creating opportunities to learn by doing. Way to go, Marlene, Patrick, Pranav, and Logan! We can’t wait to see what you make next.💙

Today, our team had the opportunity to host Pennsylvania State Representative Peter Schweyer for a visit to our facility. It was a privilege to share more about the work we do, the impact we’re making, and the exciting progress underway with our current renovations.
During his visit, Representative Schweyer took time to learn about our programs and engage with our team, gaining firsthand insight into how our efforts support the community. We also had the chance to walk him through our renovation project and highlight the improvements that are helping us better serve those who rely on our services.
We’re grateful for his interest, support, and commitment to understanding the work happening here. Partnerships like these are essential as we continue to grow and strengthen our mission.
Thank you, Representative Schweyer, for spending time with us. We appreciate your visit and ongoing support!

We’re proud to recognize Forrest F., whose dedication to supporting individuals with disabilities truly reflects Via’s Value of Growth. Forrest was nominated by his supervisor for the calm, supportive presence he brought during a difficult time, and for helping one of the individuals he supports to develop new skills and strengthen her ability to support herself.
At Via, growth means believing in people’s potential and walking alongside them as they discover it for themselves. Forrest does exactly that, and we’re grateful for the positive impact he makes every day.
Join us in celebrating Forrest and the meaningful work happening across our organization.
