Senior Corps RSVP of Lehigh, Northampton & Carbon Counties

Now all the recipients of Unsung Heroes award have been added. So proud that Bob Youst has been a member of Senior Corps RSVP for 30 years!

Each year, Lehigh County Aging and Adult Services recognizes older adults during Older Americans Month who display exceptional generosity with their time and talents to enhance the lives of others.

The event to honor these 11 individuals originally was scheduled for May, but has since been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Lehigh County Aging and Adult Services decided to personally honor each recipient by awarding them their certificates right at their door along with flowers, balloons, and a 2020 Unsung Heroes lawn sign.

When I read this story I immediately thought about all the Senior Corps Volunteers who serve in Lehigh, Northampton & Carbon Counties. For decades they have found their own true happiness by caring about someone else's happiness!

They brought balloons to a school.
One was given to every student, who had to inflate it, write their name on it and throw it in the hallway.

The professors then mixed all the balloons.

The students were given 5 minutes to find their own balloon. Despite a hectic search, no one found their balloon.

At that point the professors told the students to take the first balloon that they found and hand it to the person whose name was written on it.

Within 5 minutes everyone had their own balloon.

The professors said to the students:

′′These ballons are like happiness. We will never find it if everyone is looking for their own. But if we care about other people's happiness... we'll find ours too."

You can't always see if someone around you has a compromised immune system or underlying medical condition. Protect others from COVID-19 by wearing a mask when you leave home + keeping at least 6 feet between yourself + others.
