The Department of Public Works is responsible for maintenance and construction of the City public infrastructure and many basic services to Bethlehem city residents. The Department is comprised of six (6) bureaus: Engineering, Streets Maintenance, Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical Maintenance, Traffic Maintenance, and Urban Forestry. This page will be utilized to convey information about various

Public Works operations. The page will also give the public an opportunity to voice concerns. Please keep communication civil and productive. The Streets Department is planning on cleaning the storm drains on the northbound side of the Hill to Hill Bridge on Saturday June 20, 2026.
The right lane will be shut down from 6:00 am to 1:30 pm.

The Streets Department is planning on cleaning the storm drains on the southbound side of the Hill to Hill bridge on Saturday June 13 2026.
The right lane will be shut down from 6:00 am to 1:30 pm

UGI will be restoring trenches on S. New Street between 3rd Street and Mechanic Street tomorrow, 6/9/26. S. New Street will be closed both directions between 3rd Street and Mechanic Street, and marked with a Road Closed Ahead sign and a flagger at 4th and New Street. Traffic will still be able to access the New Street parking garage from 4th Street.

Starting tomorrow, 5/28, UGI will be restoring trenches on 3rd Street at Brodhead Avenue. They will be working in 1 lane at a time, keeping all other lanes open during that time, starting with the southbound right turn lane.

05/18/2026

On Thursday 5/21/26 the City Streets Department will be patching Illick’s Mill Rd. from Main St. extension to Monocacy Creek Rd. Hours of the closure will be 8 am- 1 pm. The west end of Illick’s Mill (Schoenersville Rd) will be open to the Memorial pool and hard closed at that point. 2 sign boards will be placed at either end of Illick’s Mill listing the closure.

04/30/2026

The Water department will have to close E 4th Street for 1 day, on Monday 5/4/26 for repairs.
The road will be closed between New Street and Webster Street, and Adams Street will be closed at Mechanic Street and also Morton Street, through traffic will still be able to enter the parking lot at Adams and Morton.
The detour for Eastbound traffic will be New Street -> E 3rd Street -> Taylor Street
The detour for Westbound traffic will be Webster Street -> E 3rd Street -> New Street.

04/06/2026

The contractor working on 3rd Street between Brodhead Avenue and New Street will need to close an additional lane of traffic starting tomorrow, 4/7/26.
Eastbound traffic will be detoured down Brodhead Avenue to 4th Street, over to New Street, and back onto 3rd Street.
Westbound traffic will remain open during this time.
This work will take place tomorrow 4/7 and Wednesday 4/8. The lane closure will wrap up at 3pm each of those days.

Please see below, a list of upcoming or ongoing road work/closures:
**Please note all dates are tentative, and may shift due to unexpected issues**

E 3rd Street (Polk to Fillmore)
• Ongoing – to be completed on 3/20/26
• The right turn only lane, from Fillmore Street to Polk Street, is
closed. Right turns can be made from the standard travel lane

W 3rd Street (New to Brodhead)
• Ongoing – to be completed today (3/11) or tomorrow (3/12)
• Northampton Street is closed from 2nd Street to 3rd Street, except for the exit ramp from Fahy Bridge
• The Westbound lane of 3rd Street is shifted with cones. Eastbound 3rd Street cannot turn left onto Northampton Street

W 3rd Street (New to Brodhead)
• To start in roughly 3 weeks
• Lane shifts for both travel lanes of 3rd Street, between New Street and Brodhead Ave. Eastbound left turn lane onto Northampton Street will be closed

Morton Street
• Ongoing – to be completed on 3/13
• Utility pole replacements at various locations on Morton Street. 1 lane closure with flaggers to maintain both directions of traffic

02/26/2026

On Monday 3/2, a contractor needs to put a crane in the roadway on 3rd Street between Fillmore and Polk Street, in the Westbound lanes.
Eastbound traffic will be unaffected, and Westbound traffic will be detoured down Fillmore to 4th Street, where they can then turn up Polk Street to get back on 3rd Street.
This work will last 1 day, from roughly 8am to 1pm.

02/17/2026

The Bureau of Electrical Maintenance will be removing the Bethlehem Christmas Stars from the 3 bridges tomorrow morning (2/18) from 9am to 12pm. Please anticipate some traffic control measures during that time.
