NEWS: NIH is awarding $21 million to launch a research program aimed at developing computer-based methods that model and simulate the self-regulating processes of human hormones, known as hormone homeostasis.

Hormone activity varies widely, creating differences in how women and men react to medications, including varying outcomes to dosing, treatment response, and drug toxicity.

The new program, called the Computational Modeling of Hormone Homeostasis Initiative, will advance human-based, data-driven models tailored to each sex’s complex male/female physiology through advanced computational techniques.

🔬When scientists first discovered HIV in the early-1980s, the condition was widely seen as a death sentence.

Today it is possible to manage the disease as a chronic condition, thanks in large part to the rise of effective antiretroviral therapies and other treatments.

One such treatment is Lenacapavir, a drug developed partly through early-stage science funded by NIH. Lenacapavir is approved by the U.S. FDA and is delivered to patients as a shot just twice per year.

Twenty-five years ago, our nation was forever changed.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives taken on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders who ran toward danger to save others.

In the days and weeks that followed, HHS joined the response, including the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and personnel from the National Disaster Medical System and the National Pharmaceutical Stockpile, which would later become important parts of HHS Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response.

We honor all who served, all who sacrificed, and all who still carry the wounds of that day.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Allergic and inflammatory conditions are on the rise, and researchers are working to better understand how everyday exposures to chemicals and pollutants may play a role.

By participating in this NIH research study, you could help advance our understanding of how environmental factors affect human health.

🔎 Who can participate?
Healthy adults ages 18–80.

🏥 What does participation involve?
• Two 7-day hospital stays spaced 4–6 weeks apart
• Participants remain in the room during each 7-day stay so researchers can carefully control environmental exposures
• Controlled environments with specific air quality, food, and personal care products
• Collection of blood, urine, skin, and other health samples
• Lung, skin, and sensory testing
• Follow-up outpatient visits after each stay

💰 You may be compensated up to $1,600 upon completion of the study.

🔬 NIH-funded research is shedding light on genetic risk factors for liver cancer.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 290,000 people, including 208,000+ All of Us Research participants, and found that rare variants in the DNA repair genes MSH6 and BRCA2 are associated with a 2–3x higher risk of liver cancer across different populations.

Cisplatin is one of the most effective cancer drugs we have — but it comes with a tough tradeoff: permanent hearing loss in up to half of patients who receive it.

NIH scientists led by Dr. Lisa Cunningham are testing whether a common cholesterol drug, atorvastatin, can reduce that risk in randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
