March was officially designated National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month by the House, Senate and White House in 1999. I have worked at the American Gastroenterological Association for almost 20 years and this is the first time that my organization has had to write to the President requesting that he CONTINUE to recognize March as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. I am appalled.

In 2017 alone, it is estimated that 137,000 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 50,000 will die. However, if detected early through screening, most colorectal cancer patients can be cured through surgery or chemotherapy. It is the goal of the colorectal cancer community to have 80% of Americans age 50 years and older to be screened by 2018.

Make no mistake, this President does not care about any of us.

The 433,872 Marylanders who have healthcare because of the ACA live in urban, rural and suburban communities. The map below shows ACA healthcare enrollment by county (per 1000 residents). You can see the ACA enrollment is highest on the Eastern Shore, Western Maryland and Baltimore City.
