A new danger looming for Georgia health care consumers (courtesy of Cover Georgia, www.coverga.org)
National health officials recently announced that they will allow states to apply for block grants and caps for parts of their Medicaid programs. Block grants and caps are simply Medicaid cuts in disguise.
Georgia leaders could choose to apply these cuts to their already-problematic Medicaid plan, making it even worse. Using a block grant or cap for Georgia's waiver could mean some Georgians lose access to needed health services and the state has to pay far more than it does now for the Medicaid program.

Georgia leaders have repeatedly claimed that their proposed changes to Medicaid would be innovative but their plans instead use failed ideas from other states that do nothing to improve the financial and physical health of thousands of Georgians. If Georgia were to apply this block grant and cap option to its proposed Medicaid plan, it would cover even fewer people and put the state at greater financial risk.
